BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg men's basketball team built an 11-point halftime lead with 12 minutes to play but had to execute a final defensive stand, forcing a turnover with four seconds remaining and surviving a half-court shot at the buzzer on Thursday night to earn a 60-58 victory over the Bloomsburg Huskies from Nelson Field House.
Shippensburg (10-8, 2-3 PSAC East) shot 50 percent from the field in the contest but had to battle from the free-throw line, hitting just 12-of-22 attempts that allowed the home-standing Huskies to creep back into the contest.
After an offensive foul was whistled against junior guard
Stephon Draper with 35 seconds remaining, Bloomsburg trailed by just one point and had a chance to run the clock down while working for the winning shot.
With eight seconds remaining, a running jumper from Jesse Betar was blocked by red-shirt junior center
Derrick Graff and the ensuing scrum resulted in a traveling call.
Red-shirt freshman guard
Lamar Drayton was fouled with three seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws, extending Shippensburg's lead to two points. The ensuing in-bounds pass got to the hands of Betar, who heaved a half-court shot that bounced off the front of the rim and was just inches from falling.
Graduate guard
Ryan Kraft led Shippensburg in scoring with 14 points and is now just 106 points short of 1,000 for his career. Junior forward
Daziah Miller had 13 points off the bench while Graff had 12 points and six rebounds.
Bloomsburg (4-14, 1-4 PSAC East) got 14 points from Michael Varanavage and 10 points from freshman forward Larry Webster.
Shippensburg returns to the court on Saturday for a PSAC Eastern Division contest at Cheyney from Cope Hall. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
