SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Despite two goals in a 36-second span of the second half from senior forward Kim Davies, the No. 3-ranked Lady Raider field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision in a PSAC crossover contest on Tuesday night at Robb Sports Complex against the No. 5-ranked Golden Bears of Kutztown.
With less than four minutes remaining, Shippensburg (9-3) defended a penalty corner opportunity and forced the ball outside the circle, where Golden Bear senior Whitney Stum fired a shot that rolled off the left goalpost and into the side of the cage. After confusion and a debate from the officials, the goal was allowed to give Kutztown a 3-2 lead.
Davies scored her goals in rapid-fire succession to erase a one-goal deficit. The first came on a beautiful rush led by freshman Kristina Taylor. After evading both a defender and the drawn-out goalkeeper, Taylor advanced the ball toward the cage and a diving Davies tipped it into the cage to tie the score at 1-1.
She scored again at 46:51 by ripping another shot into the lower portion of the cage off an assist from freshman Katie Pufnock. It was the 14th goal of the season for Davies and the tally had wrestled the momentum back in Shippensburg's favor.
With 11 minutes remaining and the score tied at 2-2, junior defender Chelsea Zook made a fabulous defensive save off a shot from Kutztown senior Kelley Healey to keep the game deadlocked. Overall, junior Amanda Houser made five saves for the Lady Raiders.
Both teams had a couple of solid shots on goal in the first half, but Houser and Kutztown freshman Emily Falko were both up to the task. Each goaltender made three saves in the opening half.
Senior Dani Haas appeared to have scored the first goal of the game less than four minutes into the half after roofing a pass from senior Carolyn Swift off a penalty corner, but the shot was ruled a high hit and the goal disallowed.
Kutztown (10-2) capitalized on the momentum and scored less than three minutes later. After sustaining pressure in the Shippensburg zone, the Golden Bears converted when senior Lyndsay Butler redirected a centering pass from fellow senior Kelley Healey to give Kutztown a 1-0 lead. Davies responded with her goals eight minutes later.
Shippensburg will host another PSAC crossover contest on Thursday at 6 p.m. against East Stroudsburg from Robb Sports Complex.
