SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The No. 3-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team won its sixth consecutive game on Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over PSAC Western Division opponent Mercyhurst at Robb Sports Complex. Freshman
Kristina Taylor scored two first-half goals to help the Lady Raiders to victory.
Shippensburg (9-1, 3-1 PSAC West) earned its sixth straight victory with another convincing defensive performance, as junior
Amanda Houser was not required to make a save in the victory. The Lady Raiders also received goals from seniors
Dani Haas and
Kim Davies.
Taylor opened the scoring in the eighth minute with her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Haas. A long clear resulted in Mercyhurst's only shot on goal of the game in the 16th minute, which Megan Rassmussen keenly directed through Houser's pads into the cage to bring the score to 1-1.
Less than four minutes later, Taylor would score what proved to be the game-winner with a wicked deflection off a shot from senior
Carolyn Swift that ramped over goaltender Jen Macri's pads and into the cage to give Shippensburg a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Raiders took a 3-1 lead into halftime with a last-minute goal from Haas off a penalty corner that was assisted by junior
Laura Wylde. Davies closed out the scoring with her 12th goal of the season at the 46:00 mark of the second half.
Shippensburg finished with a 23-3 advantage in shots and a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners. The team returns to action at home on Tuesday with a PSAC crossover match with Kutztown from Robb Sports Complex at 6 p.m.
