MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Shippensburg volleyball team opened its conference schedule with a 3-1 victory over the Marauders of Millersville on Tuesday night in Pucillo Gymnasium. Junior
Colleen Toomey recorded her second consecutive double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs, as the Lady Raiders won by scores of 25-19, 25-17, 16-25 and 26-24.
Shippensburg (1-4, 1-0 PSAC East) rebounded from a road trip in which it faced four opponents ranked among the Top 25 teams in the nation by reducing its attack errors and delivering strong defense, as the Lady Raiders totaled 62 digs and four total blocks in the game.
In addition to another solid performance from Toomey, Shippensburg received yet another strong performance from junior
Hannah Sorber, who followed up an 11-kill performance against UC-San Diego with nine kills and six digs against the Marauders.
The presence of seniors
Maureen DuVall and
Kelsi Hoffman were once again integral to the Lady Raider cause. DuVall delivered a season-high 38 assists and has now totaled 67 assists in her last two games. Meanwhile, Hoffman racked up 20 digs and has now provided 38 over the last two games.
Freshman
Libby Woffindin continued her progression as a hitter and delivered 10 kills to go along with four digs, while fellow freshman
Caitlin Marshall added three kills and seven digs.
Millersville (0-1, 0-1 PSAC East) nearly sent the game into a fifth set, but a kill by junior
Kali Antolik sealed the victory in four for the Lady Raiders. The Marauders received 12 kills from Allison Huss, while veteran setter Meredith Sinback delivered 24 assists.
Shippensburg will return to action this weekend back at Pucillo Gymnasium for competition in the Dutch Country Spiketacular on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Raiders will take on Wilmington and Dowling on Friday afternoon from Millersville.
