SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Lady Raiders capped off an exciting weekend of competition at the 2008 Coyote Classic by winning its first game of the season in its match over UC-San Diego before ultimately dropping both of its games on Saturday. Shippensburg has faced four opponents ranked among the Top 25 teams in the nation to open the season.
The Lady Raiders began the day with no easy task, a matchup with No. 1-ranked Concordia-St. Paul that the Golden Bears won by scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-10. Junior
Colleen Toomey led Shippensburg in the game with seven kills along with just two errors, while junior
Hannah Sorber delivered six kills and just two 2 errors.
Shippensburg took on the No. 22-ranked Tritons of UC-San Diego in the nightcap and nearly took the game to a fifth set. Games scores were 25-17, 25-12, 21-25 and 26-24. Toomey posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs and combined with Sorber for a total of 23 kills.
Senior
Kelsi Hoffman concluded a very solid weekend of play with a match-high 18 digs, while senior
Maureen DuVall delivered a season-high 29 assists to go along with 13 digs. Freshmen
Caitlin Marshall and
Libby Woffindin combined for 10 kills and six digs.
After returning to Pennsylvania early Monday on a red-eye flight, the Lady Raiders will begin their conference schedule on Tuesday with a game at Millersville. It will be the first game of the season for the Marauders. Game time from Pucillo Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
