Lady Raider Field Hockey Opens Season With 6-2 Win Over SCSU

Five-goal second half propels Shippensburg to victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
The No. 4-ranked Shippensburg field hockey team won its season debut on the strength of a five-goal second half, as the Lady Raiders outlasted the Owls of Southern Connecticut State by a 6-2 margin on Saturday afternoon. Senior Kim Davies tallied two goals and an assist and junior Amanda Houser made three saves for the Lady Raiders. 

After falling behind in the 18th minute, Shippensburg (1-0) evened the score at one when senior Dani Haas rifled home her first goal of the season off a penalty corner. Freshman Kristina Taylor contributed her first career goal early in the second half off an assist from senior Carolyn Swift.

Davies scored what proved to be her sixth-career game-winning goal with tally off a penalty corner in the 43rd minutes. She added another goal less than four minutes later by rifling home a pass sent to her by Taylor. Freshman Katie Pufnock and sophomore Amanda Strous rounded out the scoring for the Lady Raiders in the second half.

Overall, the Lady Raiders out-shot the Owls by a 24-6 margin and totaled a 10-4 edge in penalty corners.

Shippensburg will return to action on Sunday when it takes on Bentley to close out the weekend. Game time from New Haven is set for 11 a.m.
