Game 2

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -
Junior Kyle Rhoades extended his hitting streak to 11 games in game two while junior Kasey Kuhns drove in the game-winning run in the opener as the Shippensburg University baseball team won its fourth-straight, sweeping a PSAC crossover doubleheader at Millersville on Tuesday, 9-8 and 2-0.

The Red Raiders (20-13) won their 20th game of the season, marking the 11 consecutive year in which they have won at least 20 games. During that time, the team has won at least 30 games five times, including a school-record 43 in 2004.

Tuesday also marked the fifth consecutive win for Shippensburg against the PSAC Eastern Division and its eighth in 10 games this season. Five of those crossover victories have come on the road.

After game one was delayed an hour because of a security threat on the Millersville campus which forced campus officials to declare a lock down, the Red Raiders overcame five errors and a four-run deficit to pick up the victory.

The Marauders (6-20) took an 8-4 lead in the bottom of the third before Shippensburg scored the game's final five runs to pull out the one-run victory, their third in five games this season.

In the fourth, Rhoades hit a two-run single to left to score seniors Justin Garber and Eric Dezell, cutting the Millersville lead in half.

In the sixth, Rhoades scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly to center by sophomore Rick Shumway after Dezell scored when sophomore Kevin Scholly drew a bases loaded walk with one out. Kuhns followed Shumway with an RBI-double down the right field line that scored junior Tyler Redick to give Shippensburg its first lead since the top of the first.

Meanwhile, a trio of juniors, Thomas Ashman, Jason Kelly and Matt Wright, held the Marauders scoreless over the final four innings to help the Red Raiders post its second one-run, come-from-behind victory of the season. The last came on March 8 when the team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat Post, 11-10 in extra innings.

Ashman came on in relief of sophomore Phil Harnick with one out and Millersville leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first after Harnick faced just four batters, hitting three. Ashman managed to get Shippensburg out the jam before the Marauders could do more damage than just tying the game at 3-3.

Ashman totaled 3.2 innings, scattering seven hits and allowed four earned runs before leaving the game with the Red Raiders trailing 8-6.

Kelly came on to pitch a scoreless fifth and sixth to earn his third consecutive decision after he started the season 0-2.

Kelly set the stage for Wright to earn his first save of the season. He struck out two of the four batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh in making just his seventh relief appearance in 35 career games while totaling three saves in those seven appearances.

Garber totaled his 19th multi-hit game of the season and fourth with at least four hits as he went 4-for-5 with two runs. With his four hits, he now has totaled 237 in 172 career games, moving him past Brian Dallas '96 and into second place on the school's all-time hits list. Dallas totaled 235 from 1993-96. Garber's former teammate, Chad Stecker '05, currently holds the school record with 254.

Rhoades finished the first game 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Kuhns was 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

After a back-and-forth offensive battle in the opener, Shippensburg rode a strong pitching performance from senior Brandon Geib and used timely hitting to edge out a 2-0 victory in the second game.

Geib won his second game in as many starts, both of which have come on the road in complete game shutouts as he allowed just three hits and one walk. He also struck out two. In his last two starts, Geib has surrendered just seven hits while not allowing a run in 14 innings. He has allowed just one run in his last three appearances, a total of 15.0 innings.

After driving in the game-winning run in game one, Kuhns scored what proved to be the game-winning run in game two after he scored on an RBI-single to center by Kelly to break open a scoreless game in the top of the fifth.

In the seventh, Rhoades added an insurance run when he scored on a two-out triple left by Redick before Geib retired Millersville in order in the bottom of the inning.

Scholly finished the game 2-for-4 while Kelly and Redick each had RBI base hits for the Red Raiders.

Shippensburg returns to action on Friday when its hosts Clarion in a PSAC Western Division doubleheader at Fairchild Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Red Raiders won three of four from the Golden Eagles a year ago, including both games at home.
