Game 2

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -
Freshman Hope Cornell hit a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs and two runs while junior Lori Knopf had two RBIs and threw her third shutout of the season to guide the Shippensburg softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Shepherd on Wednesday by scores of 2-0 and 5-2. The Lady Raiders have now won nine consecutive games and have allowed just two runs in the last four games.

Shippensburg (17-11) opened the scoring in the first inning of game one after senior Liz Good reached base with a triple and scored on an RBI-groundout from senior Sarah Stengl. The Lady Raiders scratched across a run in the third inning after junior Chelsea Carson walked, stole second and eventually scored on an RBI-single from Cornell.

Knopf neutralized the Ram bats, allowing just four hits while striking out four to improve her record on the season to 5-4. She avoided a big threat in the first inning after loading the bases with one out by inducing a fielder's choice to home and a groundout to keep Shepherd on the scoreboard.  Knopf later worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning by getting Rebekah Walsh to line into a double play to end the inning.

Senior Jill Kirby pitched the Lady Raiders to victory in Game 2 by throwing a complete game and allowing just six hits and one earned run for her third win of the season. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Shippensburg scratched together three runs to take the lead.

After Stengl was hit by a pitch and advanced to third base following a passed ball and a wild pitch, Cornell delivered her fourth home run of the season to give the Lady Raiders the lead. Sophomore Lisamarie Ramagli laced a double into left-center field that scored freshman Moira Johnsen to extend the lead to three runs.

In the fifth, Stengl singled and Cornell walked with one out, and Knopf came threw at the plate with a two-run double to give Shippensburg a five-run cushion.

Shippensburg will carry its momentum into a conference-opening doubleheader with East Stroudsburg on Friday at Robb Field beginning at 2:30 p.m. The games were originally to be played at East Stroudsburg but were moved to Shippensburg earlier in the week due to the condition of the Warriors' home field.
