Kim Tully completed a two-goal comeback by scoring with 3:04 remaining in overtime to give the Shippensburg field hockey team a decisive 4-3 victory over PSAC Western Division opponent Mercyhurst that secured the team's eighth consecutive trip to the PSAC Tournament.
Shippensburg (17-3, 6-2 PSAC West) finished its best regular season since 2005 with its seventh consecutive victory but in doing so had to withstand a severe test from Mercyhurst (9-9, 4-4 PSAC West), who lost for just the second time at home this season and defeated No. 1 Indiana (Pa.) last week.
Trailing 1-0 in the first half, senior
Dani Haas scored off an assist from junior
Jamie Doughty. However, the Lakers responded with a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead late in the half. A crucial tally came with just 17 seconds remaining in the first half, as senior
Kim Davies scored a goal off an assist from Haas. With the late goal, the Lady Raiders only trailed by one at the half, 3-2.
The trip to overtime was made possible by Davies, who beat Mercyhurst goaltender Jen Macri. Junior
Lauren Hollingsworth had the assist. Davies finishes the regular season with the second-most goals in a single season in school history, having totaled 26 through 20 games.
Overall, the Lady Raiders out-shot the Lakers 14-6 and totaled six penalty corners in the contest. Junior
Amanda Houser made one save in the victory.
Shippensburg, the No. 2 seed in the Western Division, will take on host Bloomsburg, the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Division, on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
