SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Freshman Caitlin Marshall recorded a career-high 14 kills with 12 digs for her first career double-double on just three hitting errors but the Lady Raider volleyball team could not close out two crucial sets in a 3-1 loss to the University of New Haven on Friday night at Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (13-13) had five players total at least 10 digs in the match, including 18 from senior libero Kelsi Hoffman and 15 from both senior setter Maureen DuVall and senior Karey Toms. Junior Colleen Toomey added 10 digs with seven kills.

The Lady Raiders opened up with a 25-20 victory in the first set that was clinched on an attack error from Rhe-Ann Niles. Shippensburg was back and forth with New Haven in the second set and had cut its deficit to 23-22, but an attack error from Hoffman led to a 25-23 victory for the Chargers in set number two.

The third set was even more of a marathon. Shippensburg held a 23-22 lead, but the Chargers rallied after a timeout to lead 24-23. A Lady Raider timeout instilled some momentum and a kill from Toomey tied the third set at 24-24. The teams exchanged points all the way to 27-27, when a wild rally ended with a kill for Elizabeth Akinbiyi to eventually lead New Haven to a 29-27 win in the third set.

The Chargers won the fourth set 25-22 and clinched the victory on a kill from Charisse Cotton. DuVall added 40 assists for Shippensburg, while junior Hannah Sorber contributed 10 kills and one solo block.

Shippensburg will compete twice on Saturday at its home Regional Crossover. The Lady Raiders take on Alderson-Broaddus at 12:30 p.m. and NYIT at 3 p.m from Heiges Field House.
