SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's basketball team used a decisive 19-1 run to open an 11-point lead midway through the second half en route to its third consecutive win, 72-61 over Millersville in a PSAC crossover contest Sunday afternoon at Heiges Field House.
During the run, the Lady Raiders (11-3) scored 12 points on four three-pointers while holding the Marauders to 0-of-8 shooting from the floor and forcing four turnovers. Shippensburg finished the game with a season-high 10 three-pointers, tying the mark set in yesterday's 74-62 win over West Chester at home.
With the victory, the Lady Raiders are off to their best start to a season since the 2001-02 campaign, when Shippensburg also started the year 11-3. That season, the Lady Raiders finished with a 20-9 record and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore forward #Lauren Beckley# and senior guard Megan Fogle scored 21 and 20 points, respectively, marking the third time this season that both have scored 20 or more points in the same game. By comparison, the team had two players score at least 20 points in the same game just once last season.
After Jenna Philo hit a three-pointer to match Millersville's largest lead of the game, 41-34 with 16:40 remaining in the second half, the Marauders (9-3) would not score on another field goal until Kristin Kunzman scored on a layup with 9:59 to play, ending a stretch of 6:41 without one.
During that time, Shippensburg turned a seven-point deficit into an 11-point lead before Kunzman's basket cut the deficit to eight.
Millersville shot only 29.4 percent from the field in the second half, making just 10 field goals while committing nine turnovers and being outscored, 43-30.
The Lady Raiders also received a second half boost from freshman forward Kasey Gardner who scored 13 of her 17 points in the half after going 4-of-6 from three point range and 3-of-5 from the free throw line. She also made two three-point attempts.
For the second-straight game, sophomore guard Michelle Metz set a new career-high in assists, dishing out seven on Sunday while adding 12 points. During the team's current three-game win streak, she is averaging 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Metz currently ranks third in the PSAC in assists at 4.6 per game.
Shippensburg will now have a six-day layoff before concluding its PSAC crossover schedule at Cheyney next Sunday, January 13. The Wolves, who are currently 2-9 following today's 74-70 victory at Slippery Rock, will host Lock Haven next Saturday.
