SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's basketball team scored 10 of the final 12 points in the first half to erase a seven-point deficit and take a one-point lead that it would never relinquish as the Lady Raiders won their sixth-straight game, 72-65 over Edinboro Saturday afternoon inside Heiges Field House.
The win was also the second consecutive for Shippensburg (14-3, 2-0 PSAC West) to open PSAC Western Division play.
Sophomore forward Lauren Beckley totaled her 12th double double of the season and third in as many games with a team-high 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Beckley, who entered the game as the nation's leading scorer, averaging 22.9 points per game, now has 936 points in 45 career games.
Trailing 30-23 with 4:44 left in the first half, Shippensburg finished with a 10-2 run while holding the Fighting Scots (10-5, 1-1 PSAC West) to just 1-of-7 shooting from the floor to take a 33-32 halftime lead.
Freshman forward #Kasey Gardner# scored five of the Lady Raiders' 10 points, including a three-pointer with 2:45 remaining to give the team its first lead 33-30 after Beckley tied it with a three just 36 seconds earlier.
Gardner finished with seven points, a career-high 10 rebounds and four assists. She was also one of three players, joining senior guard #Megan Fogle# and sophomore guard #Michelle Metz# to play the entire 40 minutes.
Fogle finished the game with 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half, while adding four rebounds and five assists. Together with junior forward Elise Mercer who totaled 12 of her 14 points in the second half, the duo combined for 28 of Shippensburg's 39 second half points.
Metz added nine points, three rebounds and five assists for the Lady Raiders who trailed by as many as 12 points in the game's first seven minutes, 19-7. Edinboro, who entered the game leading the PSAC in three-point field goals made, scored nine of its 19 points from three-point range after starting 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
However, Shippensburg would hold the Fighting Scots to just 2-of-7 shooting from three-point range the rest of the game.
Samantha Reimer led Edinboro with a game-high 25 points while Rae Sherred had 13, including nine on three, three-pointers. Reimer and Sherred combined for all five of the Fighting Scots three's.
Shippensburg wraps up a three-game home stand to begin conference play on Wednesday when it welcomes California (Pa.) to Heiges Field House. Game time is at 6:00 p.m., with the game being broadcast live on Shippensburg University student radio station WSYC 88.7 FM and on the internet at raiders.ship.edu.
