SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore forward Lauren Beckley totaled her 11th double double in 16 games this season with 20 points and 13 rebounds, both game-highs, as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team defeated Lock Haven 69-55 on Wednesday night at Heiges Field House.
The Lady Raiders (13-3, 1-0 PSAC West) extended their win streak to five while also winning their fifth PSAC Western Division opener in nine seasons under head coach Kristy Trn. Trn was honored before the game for becoming Shippensburg's career wins leader on January 6, passing her former coach Dave Smith, with a 72-61 victory over Millersville at home.
With her 20 points, Beckley now has 366 on the season for an average of 22.9 per game which leads all of Division II. She entered tonight's game with 346 points, an average of 23.1 per game, which was second in the nation behind Johannah Leedham of Franklin Pierce who was ranked first with 351 for an average of 23.4 per game.
Leedham scored 13 Wednesday night as the 15th-ranked Ravens lost in overtime at Le Moyne, 68-64.
Freshman Kasey Gardner added 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists while sophomore guard Michelle Metz had 13 points and five assists.
Shippensburg held a 34-20 halftime lead after holding Lock Haven (5-10, 0-1 PSAC West) to just 25.0 percent shooting from the floor and holding a 26-18 advantage in rebounds.
Beckley and Gardner combined for 20 points and 11 rebounds in the half, totaling near identical stat lines as Beckley had 10 points and six rebounds with Gardner posting 10 points and five rebounds.
Both teams overcame a sloppy start as the game was tied at 8-8 with 14:49 left in the half before the Lady Raiders went on a 10-2 run to lead 18-10 with 6:40 left.
During the run, Shippensburg held the Lady Eagles without a field goal for a span of 7:38 until Lauren Kelshaw's three-pointer ended a stretch in which Lock Haven went 0-for-8 from the field with four turnovers and four missed free throws.
The Lady Raiders increased its lead to as many as 22 in the second half before Lock Haven used a 15-3 run to cut its deficit to just 10, 46-36 with 13:17 remaining.
The Lady Eagles would eventually get the lead down to nine with 5:20 left to play, but Shippensburg sealed its sixth-straight home win and seventh in eight games this season with a 12-3 run, 10 points of which came from the free throw line where the team was 20-for-26 on the evening.
The Lady Raiders return to action at home this Saturday when they host Edinboro beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots defeated Slippery Rock on the road Wednesday night, 82-59.
