Second Half Struggles Bring Down Lady Raiders in 64-49 Loss to Hillsdale

11/17/2007 2:16:27 PM

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Led by 18 points and nine rebounds from tournament MVP Katie Cezat, Hillsdale College captured the championship of the 2007 Wolf's Bus Lines Tournament with a 64-49 victory over the Shippensburg University women's basketball team Saturday night at Heiges Field House.

The Chargers (2-0), who were picked to finish second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) this season following last year's 19-9 overall record, are just the second team other than Shippensburg to capture the team championship in the 10-year history of the event which was first sponsored by Wolf's Bus Lines in 1997.

Julie Slot added 11 points and seven rebounds in joining Cezat on the all-tournament team.

For Shippensburg (1-1), senior guard #Megan Fogle# scored a game-high 20 points, three short of her career-high and marking the first time since Feb. 11, 2006 that she has scored at least 20 points, a span of 35 games.

Fogle was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line and in two games this season has gone 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. The school record for consecutive free throws made in a season is 25, set by Emily Swingler in 2003.

After totaling 34 points, seven rebounds and six assists this weekend, Fogle earned her second Wolf's Bus Lines All-Tournament after also earning a selection in 2005.

Despite an uncharacteristic shooting performance from sophomore Lauren Beckley in which she was 6-of-19, the 2007 PSAC Western Division Rookie of the Year still managed 13 points and six rebounds, marking the 29th time in 30 career games that she has reached double figures.

Combined with her 31 points and 10 rebounds on Friday, Beckley earned her second consecutive spot on the Wolf's Bus Lines All-Tournament Team.

Poor shooting proved to be a big difference in the game for the Lady Raiders as Hillsdale held them to just 23.3 percent from the floor and 20 points in the second half. In addition, Shippensburg did not get any points from its bench as it was outscored 22-0 while being outrebounded 42-28 and on the short end of a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint.

On Friday, the Lady Raiders held a 17-16 edge in bench points and a 42-24 margin in rebounds in an 89-71 victory over Tiffin.

After trailing by just six at halftime, Shippensburg would find itself down by as many as 22 points in the second half after totaling just 11 points on 4-of-25 shooting in the first 17-plus minutes.

Saturday night also marked the first time that the Lady Raiders had been held under 50 points in the last 29 games. In last year's season opener, Shippensburg was held to 48 points in a 54-48 loss to St. Andrew's Presbyterian in the Wolf's Bus Lines Tournament.

After totaling 16 points and seven rebounds in her first collegiate game, freshman Kasey Gardner managed eight points and four rebounds in 30 foul-plaqued minutes. She was also 4-of-11 from the field.

A night after totaling 10 turnovers, sophomore guard Michelle Metz rebounded with six points, six rebounds and five assists while also adding two steals. Through two games this season, she is averaging 5.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists.

Shippensburg has an eight-day layoff before returning to action against the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown next Sunday, November 25 at Heiges Field House beginning at 3:00 p.m. The game will mark the return of former Lady Raider assistant coach Sasha Palmer who is currently in her first season with the Lady Cats.

UPJ will enter the game with a 1-1 record as well after falling at Clarion on Saturday, 81-59.
