Wesley Mallicone enters his 20th year as the Director of Sports Medicine at Shippensburg University in 2021-22.
 
Mallicone leads a sports medicine department that provides services to 20 athletic teams and supervises the comprehensive health care needs of approximately 450 Shippensburg student athletes. He is active within the campus community and has served on various campus committees.
 
A 1999 graduate of Duquesne with a bachelor of science in athletic training, Mallicone received his master of science in psychology from Shippensburg in December 2000.
 
In October 2015, Mallicone was selected as the inaugural winner of the Distinguished Alumni award from Duquesne University’s Department of Athletic Training at The John G. Rangos Sr. School of Health Sciences. Mallicone was selected for being “most emblematic of the qualities and values of the Rangos School,” and for demonstrating “the qualities of professional excellence and achievement, service to others, and being a leader in their industry.”
 
Mallicone first worked as a SU graduate assistant in sports medicine under the mentorship of Pennsylvania Athletic Training Hall of Fame member Steve Heckler, who served Shippensburg for 27 years.
 
Following his graduation from Shippensburg, Mallicone became a member of the Philadelphia Eagles staff after being hired as a seasonal intern athletic trainer for the 2001 season. With the Eagles, Mallicone assisted in injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, and emergency medical care.
 
After working two training camps and a full season in the NFL, Mallicone became an assistant athletic trainer with the Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europa in March 2002 prior to coming to Shippensburg. Additionally, he has worked numerous offseason minicamps with the Minnesota Vikings – a tradition he continues to this day.
 
Mallicone also had an athletic training internship with the Pittsburgh Pirates through the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS).
 
Mallicone is a nationally board-certified athletic trainer with a license in Pennsylvania and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association (EATA) and Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society (PATS). He is also a certified instructor in Professional Rescuer, First Aid/CPR and AED for the American Red Cross.
 
Mallicone also served on the PATS Executive Board as the PATS Southcentral Representative from 2014-17. In recent years, Mallicone has become a passionate advocate for organ and tissue donation with the Gift of Life Donor Program, a non-profit organization. On Aug. 4, 2011, Mallicone was the recipient of a life-saving liver transplant
 
Mallicone has volunteered his time and spoken at numerous engagements to support awareness for organ and tissue donation and promote organ donor awareness. On New Year’s Day 2016, Mallicone participated in the Tournament of Roses Parade. He rode on the Donate Life America float representing the Gift of Life program. 
 
A native of Uniontown, Mallicone currently resides in Shippensburg.
