Seth Bloomquist ’96M is in his 17th season as Shippensburg University’s head wrestling coach in 2025-26 and his 22nd season overall with the Raider program.

In 16 years as Shippensburg’s head coach, Bloomquist has instructed 20 NCAA national qualifiers, six NCAA All-Americans, 45 regional place-winners and 23 PSAC Championships place-winners.

In 2025, Bloomquist was named as one of six finalists for the Bob Bubb Coaching in Excellence Award, a prestigious honor annually issued by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). It marked the fourth time in his head coaching career that he has been nominated for the award.

In 2023, Bloomquist guided a roster that featured 16 newcomers to a 9-9 dual meet record. He marked his 100th career dual meet win in thrilling fashion when the Raiders came from behind to edge conference foe Seton Hill at Heiges Field House.

Bloomquist maintained a streak of 14 consecutive seasons with at least one NCAA Championships qualifier during his tenure (2009-23). The Raiders sent multiple wrestlers to the NCAA Division II Championships for the first time in eight years in 2023, as Avery Shay and Danny Scheib qualified at 157 and 285 pounds, respectively. Shay took eight place in the 157-pound bracket, becoming the Raiders' sixth All-American under Bloomquist.

During the 2021-22 season, Tyshawn White placed third at 125 pounds in the 2022 NCAA Division II Championships, he won the Super Regional One at 125 pounds.

In 2018, Bloomquist directed Evan Ramos earned his second All-America honor with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The year prior, Ramos became the third unique All-American under Bloomquist’s direction with a fifth-place finish at nationals.

In 2016, Ramos and freshman Adam Martz represented the Raiders at 197 pounds and 157 pounds respectively at the NCAA Championships after SU finished seventh at the Super Region I Championships and, for the first time under Bloomquist, had multiple wrestlers post Top 3 finishes at the PSAC Championships.

At the 2015 NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Championships, SU finished in seventh place and advanced four men to the NCAA Division II National championships. The performance marks the most NCAA qualifiers in one season for Shippensburg University wrestling under Bloomquist, as SU last had four national qualifiers in 2006-07. The Raiders had as many national qualifiers in 2015 as regional powers Pitt-Johnstown and Kutztown.

Two years prior, the Raiders placed sixth at the 2013 NCAA Super Region I Championships and seventh at the PSAC Championships – their best finish at each event since 2007.

One of four regional place-winners in 2013, redshirt-freshman Cameron Throckmorton earned a trip to the NCAA championships after winning the Super Region 1 title at 133 pounds to become Bloomquist’s first regional champion.

Bloomquist led the Raiders to back-to-back seasons of 12 or more dual-meet victories in 2011-12 and 2012-13, marking the first time SU had achieved such a feat since the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. The 12-8 dual-meet record of the 2012-13 season signified SU’s first over-.500 dual-meet season since 2007-08.

Wrestlers Cody Myers and Kenny Stank earned trips to the 2012 NCAA Championships to highlight a group of five Atlantic Region place-winners.

The 2010-11 season also featured two NCAA qualifiers, including All-American 125-pounder Chris Kochinsky. Bloomquist’s first season as the head coach, 2009-10, featured him mentoring All-American Chris Barrick to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA national championships.

Bloomquist served as SU’s interim head wrestling coach from April 2009 to August 2012. He joined the SU coaching staff in 2004 and was an assistant coach for five seasons prior to his promotion.

In five seasons as an assistant with the Raiders, Bloomquist was instrumental in helping the team achieve 37 dual match victories, 10 All-Americans, five NCAA East Region champions and one national champion, the first-ever in team history. In 2006 along with head coach Don Tabar, the duo helped guide Shippensburg to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, the highest-ever finish by a Raider team at the national championships.

Prior to his arrival at Shippensburg, Bloomquist spent four seasons as the head coach at Bradford High School from 1998-2001 and three at his alma mater, Kane High School from 1993-96. In seven seasons as a high school head coach, he mentored four District IX champions, two regional champions and three state qualifiers, including placewinner and two-time district and regional champion Justin Brinkley who placed third at 189 pounds in 1995 and fourth in 1994.

A standout wrestler in his own right, Bloomquist totaled a 74-14-1 record at Kane from 1982-86 where he was a member of the school’s only three District IX championship teams from 1984-86 under three-time District IX AA Coach of the Year, Barry Johnson. As a sophomore in 1984, Bloomquist won a District IX championship and finished fourth at the PIAA state championships after posting a 3-2 record at 98 pounds. In 1986, he was a member of the Pennsylvania-New York Big 30 team that competed in Europe.

Bloomquist had planned to continue wrestling at Clarion University before a knee injury ended his competitive career during his freshman season in 1988.

A 1993 graduate of Clarion with a bachelor of science degree in education, Bloomquist received a master of science degree in administration of justice from Shippensburg in 1996.

In addition to his coaching duties with the Raiders, Bloomquist serves as the director of detention monitoring for the Pennsylvania Juvenile Court Judges’ Commission (JCJC). He holds a JCJC office in Horton Hall at Shippensburg University.

Bloomquist is responsible for monitoring compliance with the standards for secure detention and providing technical assistance to county probation departments and detention facilities regarding these standards and alternatives to detention. He also serves as a Pennsylvania JCJC Court Consultant for 10 counties throughout the state.

Bloomquist is the longest serving secure compliance monitor in the nation, having served in the position for 22 years. He is considered one of the nation's leading experts in providing strategies and creating policy as required to meet the demands of the Federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA). Seth has assisted Pennsylvania in writing state amendments and regulations as required by statutory changes within the JJDPA.

Bloomquist is currently responsible for conducting on-site monitoring visits to all secure holding facilities within the state of Pennsylvania in relationship to the compliance with protections of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, which includes the following: police departments, county jails, state prisons, court holding facilities, secure detention centers, secure juvenile correctional facilities and all county booking and processing centers.

In 2021, Seth developed the Pennsylvania State Manual in related compliance with the federal JJDPA core requirements as approved by Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). This manual is considered one of the country's best models and has been used as a template by several states. In 2020, The Coalition for Juvenile Justice appointed Bloomquist to serve as a National Mentor to multiple states regarding the application of the JJDPA. In 2021 and 2023 the CJJ appointed him to serve on the National Compliance Monitor Training Committee.

During his tenure as a high school head coach, Bloomquist was the Assistant Director of Juvenile Probation with the McKean County Juvenile Probation Department, working as the director of the “Boondoc’s” program and school based probation in McKean County, while also serving as a DUI instructor for adult offenders. He was named Pennsylvania Juvenile Probation Officer of the Year in 1998 and in 2022 was named Juvenile Correctional Professional of the Year.

In 2011, Bloomquist’s son was diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), a rare allergic/immune condition that affects white blood cells within the body. EoE diseases are chronic, and the symptoms are often debilitating and can greatly impact a patient’s quality of life. More information about the disease is available at http://apfed.org/.
