Tyler Hewitt is in his sixth season as an assistant track & field coach for throws at his alma mater in 2024-25, including his fifth season as the primary instructor for the shot put and the discus.

Hewitt has instructed a group of throwers who have garnered significant acclaim at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships. Overall, Hewitt has coached 49 conference placewinners, including 16 All-PSAC (Top 3) finishers, and 12 NCAA Division II provisional qualifiers.

Last season, Hewitt instructed 12 conference championships place-winners planning the indoor and outdoor shot put, including women's discus champion Makayla Decker. In the discus, SU had five scoring performers - three women and two men. Four of Hewitt's athletes earned USTFCCCA All-Region classifications: freshman Gian Greggo in the indoor shot, senior Josh Herbster and freshman Donovan Kitchen in the discus, and Decker in the discus.

In 2023, Hewitt was the instructor to a throws group that compiled 10 new additions to Top 10 rankings in SU history. Pat Maloney exceled in the discus, earning All-America Second Team honors with a ninth-place finish at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Overall, Hewitt's throwers have made 17 new additions to the school's Top 10 event rankings over the last four seasons.

At the 2021 PSAC Outdoor Championships, five Raiders scored in the shot put – marking the first known occurrence in league history that five athletes from the same school were conference placewinners in the shot put in the same season.

Hewitt’s shot putters followed that up in 2022 by repeating the feat. In two years, SU men’s shot putters have scored 36 of the possible 78 points at the outdoor conference championships (46 percent).

Hewitt began his tenure as an SU coach in the 2019-20 academic year, helping to instruct throwers in the hammer and the weight. Among his athletes was the PSAC indoor champion in the weight, Cam Strohe.

Overall, Hewitt has coached four individuals who have combined for five conference championships – Strohe in the weight (2020), Maloney in the discus (2021, 2022), Kate Matrisciano in the outdoor shot put (2021), and Decker in the discus (2024).

Following the team’s return to action after the pandemic, Hewitt was elevated to his current role as the man in charge for the shot and the discus.

As a collegiate athlete for the Raiders, Hewitt walked onto the team in 2016 and completed his tenure as a seven-time conference championships qualifier and a four-year scholar athlete. His signature performance at the conference meet was a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw at the 2019 league championships.

During his time as a student at Shippensburg, Hewitt completed an internship with the Raider Academic Center for Student-Athletes (RAC) and an academic success internship at Penn State Mont Alto. He has also been an annual instructor and counselor at SU track & field summer camps since 2016.

A native of Fairfield, Hewitt was a three-time PIAA District 3 ‘AA’ medalist and a 2014 state championships qualifier in the discus. He was also a starting wide receiver in football and a wrestler for the Knights.

Hewitt earned his bachelor of arts in history from Shippensburg in May 2018 and later received his master of public administration from Shippensburg in August 2020.  He is married to his wife Sarah ’17, a fellow assistant coach with the Raiders.
