2011 (Junior): In her second year with the Raiders, Wiechelt made significant strides and closed the season particularly strong. Wiechelt shattered her 6K collegiate PR by 78 seconds as the team’s No. 8 runner at the PSAC championships, placing among the Top 50. She closed her season by winning the LHU Go Fast River Run with a time of 23:13. Overall, Wiechelt finished six cross country races – including a season debut in the SU Piper Alumni Open that marked a new collegiate-best for the 4K. Arguably her strongest run of the year came as SU’s No. 1 finish in the open race of the Paul Short Invitational, posting a time of 24:06 that at the time was a 52-second PR. Outdoors on the track, Wiechelt impressed with her efforts in the steeplechase – placing eighth at the PSAC championships with a time of 11:28.
2010 (Sophomore): Wiechelt posted two PRs in her second season running for the Raiders. At the Alumni Invitational 4K, she achieved a time of 16:38. Then, at the Division II Challenge 6K, Wiechelt recorded a time of 24:58. She also ran in the Dickinson Invitational, where she posted a time of 25:07 in the 6K as the No. 8 finisher on the team.
2009 (Freshman): In her first collegiate season, Wiechelt competed in six races for the Patriots of George Mason University (Division I). She was the No. 8 runner for her squad at both the ECAC Championships [5K PR of 21:05] and at the 6K CAA Championships. Her four other competitions included the 5K Blue and Gold Invitational, the 5K JMU Invitational, the 6K Mason Invitational and the 5K Lou Onesty Invitational in which she was her team’s No. 5 runner.
Cumberland Valley High School: Wiechelt totaled 12 varsity letters as a cross country, track and field and swimming student-athlete. Her distance coach was Skip Springman. She graduated as a member of the National Honor Society and the National Foreign Language Honor Society.
Personal: Mary Katherine Wiechelt is the daughter of Tom and Cathy Wiechelt and her major is biology with a concentration in health professions. Wiechelt is also seeking minors in chemistry and geography. She has a sister, Suzy, who was a four-year swimmer at Shippensburg and graduated in 2009, and a brother, Tom, who previously wrestled for Shippensburg.
