Doug Knol is in his 33rd season as an assistant coach for sprints and hurdles with the Shippensburg University Track & Field team in 2025-26.

A seven-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year, Knol has instructed a total of 666 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships placewinners, 287 All-PSAC (Top 3) finishers and 87 PSAC Championship performances in addition to 40 PSAC Championship relays.

Extracting the data further, Knol has instructed 168 unique PSAC placewinners, 85 unique All-PSAC finishers, and 38 unique individual PSAC Champions in sprint or hurdle events.

Success has not been limited to the conference championships. Knol has instructed 55 unique individuals to a total of 198 USTFCCCA All-Region classifications – performances that have ranked among the Top 5 in the Atlantic Region (PSAC, MEC, CIAA) at season’s end. Since the USTFCCCA All-Region awards were first instituted in 2011, Raider sprinters and hurdlers have totaled 106 honors, while 23 relays have earned the classifications.

On a national level, Knol has mentored 26 unique individuals who have combined for a total of 47 USTFCCCA All-America honors. Knol has coached 19 individual All-America performances and seven All-American relays.

Dating back to the start of his Knol’s tenure in the fall of 1993, Shippensburg University Track & Field has won 60 PSAC Championships (17 PSAC men’s indoor titles, 21 PSAC men’s outdoor titles, nine PSAC women’s indoor titles, 13 PSAC women’s outdoor titles).

Simply put, Knol is one of the most successful and accomplished assistant coaches in the history of the PSAC – spanning all sports.

For both his unrivaled success as a track & field instructor and the indelible mark he has left on Raider Athletics, Knol became just the second assistant coach ever inducted into the Shippensburg University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.

A 1991 graduate of Shippensburg, Knol was a four-time PSAC qualifier in his specialty event, the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. During his junior and senior seasons, Shippensburg won conference titles beginning a string of four consecutive championships.

Knol has a master’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of Delaware.

Through the entirety of his tenure at Shippensburg, Knol has worked full time as a mathematics and advanced mathematics teacher in the Big Spring School District. Knol also worked at Bashore Scout Reservation for the Boy Scouts of America for more than 30 years.
