Gary Carter returns to the SU staff in 2015 after a year away from the program. Carter is in his fourth year overall with the Red Raider coaching staff and serves as a valuable offensive assistant.

With the Red Raiders, Carter serves as an offensive assistant in the press box on game days. His coaching responsibilities and instruction has traditionally involved work with the tight ends and now this season includes work with the wide receivers.

From 2011-13, Carter was an integral contributor to Red Raider coaching staff whose teams won 25 games and scored more than 1,400 points, averaging 40.8 points per contest. Among the tight ends Carter has instructed is Alex Kuljian, who earned All-PSAC honors as a senior in 2014.

Carter was an assistant football coach at Chambersburg Area Senior High School for 12 seasons from 1997-2008 under coaches Don Folmar and Shawn Kimple. He began as a volunteer assistant with the Trojans and worked with various positions before spending his final three seasons as the offensive coordinator.

In 1995, Carter began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Homer-Center High School in Indiana County. He filled that role for two seasons.

As a collegiate athlete at Western Maryland (now known as McDaniel), Carter was an All-MAC defensive back for the Green Terror. He also earned All-MAC honors in baseball and was a team captain during a senior season in which he led the team in runs and slugging percentage.

In high school, Carter was a quarterback and a safety as a senior in 1989 when the Trojans went 11-0 in the regular season. He threw for nearly 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns as a quarterback while intercepting nine passes on defense. His exploits earned him Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division First Team honors on defense and spots on the Public Opinion First Team offense and defense.

Carter currently works for the Pennsylvania State Police and is based out of Chambersburg.
