Mikayla Cheney was hired as the full-time assistant field hockey coach at Shippensburg University on Aug. 8, 2022.
 
Cheney returns to Shippensburg after spending a season as the interim head coach at Coker College. In 2021, Cheney began as the graduate assistant with the Cobras before being named the interim head coach. Cheney helped lead the Cobras to a 6-9 record, winning the last four games. 
 
Her primary coaching responsibility with the Raiders is the team’s defense.
 
A Lancaster native, Cheney helped the Raiders win three consecutive NCAA Division II National Championships from 2016-2018 and was a starting defender who anchored the SU defense. Cheney is a two-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American (2018 and 2019), a three-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) honoree and a team captain. 
 
Cheney is a past recipient of the team’s Amanda Strous Memorial Scholarship, having earned the honor to wear the No. 22 jersey in 2019. 

Cheney earned her bachelor's degree in exercise science from Shippensburg in 2020.
