Sam Crater joined the Shippensburg University baseball coaching staff in 2019 as a volunteer assistant.
 
Crater is a two-time Mountain East Conference (MEC) Pitcher of the Year, having played for the Rams of Shepherd. He earned the honors as a junior in 2015 and a senior in 2016. Over his final two seasons with the Rams, Crater was 20-4 with a 2.33 ERA, striking out 136 batters in 146.2 innings. He threw 10 complete games, including two shutouts.
 
In his debut season (2014), Crater tied for the team lead in saves with three in addition to making four starts. He struck out 15 hitters in nine innings. Prior to spending the 2014-16 seasons with the Rams, Crater spent time at Frederick Community College in Maryland.
 
Crater also played outfield and totaled 130 at-bats with the Rams, posting a .285 career batting average to complement 32 RBIs, 28 runs, four home runs and six doubles.
 
Overall, Crater was a two-time National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-Region performer and a 2016 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Region selection.
 
Crater is a native of Dillsburg and a graduate of Northern York High School.
