ABOUT THE PAUL KAISER CLASSIC:
The Paul Kaiser Classic is a rejuvenation of the Shippensburg University Collegiate Invitational that was discontinued in 1999 due to the implementation of the PSAC mandated quad meets. This meet has been renamed in honor of long-time Shippensburg University cross country and track & field coach, Paul Kaiser.
Paul, also known as “Killer Kaiser” for his competitive spirit, began his collegiate coaching career at Shippensburg as an assistant in 1974. He came to Shippensburg after coaching cross country at Chambersburg High School for 10 years. During his tenure at CASHS, Kaiser led the Trojans to an incredible 96 consecutive dual meet victories.
Upon arriving at Shippensburg, it didn’t take long for Kaiser to make his mark. He took over head coaching duties for both the cross country and track and field teams from Steve Jarrett in 1977. In 1979, the men’s cross country team placed ninth at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships and eighth in 1980.
In 1981, the men’s track and field team placed second to Slippery Rock at the PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, losing by just one point. Kaiser then retired from teaching and coaching in order to enter the private business sector, but returned to Shippensburg in 1984 in a full-time position as the Director of Camps and Conferences and Head Men’s Track and Field Coach.
Under Kaiser's direction, the men went on to win PSAC outdoor titles in 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1990 while accumulating a dual meet record of 60-11 with four undefeated seasons. He coached many conference champions and All-Americans including John Doub, Greg Sanders, Gary Bicking, Doug Bushong, Wayne Blatt, Mike Carey, Rob Berkebile, Matt McVetta, Ed Shaw and Eric Morgan.
Kaiser also guided Matt Opilo, Steve Spence and Randy Lowe to NCAA championships. Kaiser reluctantly gave up coaching in 1990 in order to exert more energy into his expanded camps and conference role, but retained the title of Director of Cross Country and Track and Field until his retirement in 2003. His responsibilities with conferences included managing the PIAA District III and PIAA State Track and Field Championships which have been held at Shippensburg annually since 1976.
