ABOUT JACK RODDICK:

John 'Jack' Roddick '47
John ‘Jack’ Roddick ’47 was affiliated with Shippensburg University for more than 70 years.

During his collegiate career, Roddick was an outstanding runner who thrived in the quarter-mile and the high jump. In 1942, Roddick competed at the PSAC Championships held at West Chester and finished second in the high jump behind Bloomsburg’s Mathias Kashuba and second in the 880 behind teammate Andy Bodnar.

After an extended tour of military duty during World War II, Roddick returned to finish his degree in 1947. An agreement was reached that ended his student-teaching commitment in December in order for Roddick to become a chemistry and physics teacher at Swatara Township High School. His role with the school also involved being the head coach of football and track.

Roddick served Swatara Township for eight years. The school won football and track championships for three consecutive years from 1951-53 and both programs were consistently among the leading teams in the Old Lower Susquehanna Conference. In all eight of his years with Swatara Township, Roddick brought his track and field teams to compete at Shippensburg’s high school invitational – winning at least one team title.

In 1955, Roddick was hired by Shippensburg University to be an assistant professor in the science department while serving as the head football coach and the head track and field coach. Roddick spent 17 years as Shippensburg’s head track and field coach and brought the university much prominence – including an undefeated stretch of 43 dual or triple meets. The school-record streak began during his debut season.

As Shippensburg’s track and field coach, Roddick’s involvement with the SU high school invitational came full circle. He began his involvement in the 1940s as a SU student-athlete in charge of working the high jump pit. After bringing his high school students from Swatara Township, Roddick made the shift from high school coach to collegiate coach – meaning a shift in responsibilities.

Instead of simply having to report for an assignment or transport his team for the competition, Roddick and athletic director Tom Crist were in charge of the entire meet’s operations – from drawing up heat sheets with pencil and paper to making sure there were available workers to cover all aspects of the competition.

Roddick helped run the meet smoothly for each of his years as Shippensburg’s track coach – a role from which he retired during the early 1970s in order to focus on the newly constructed Dibert Planetarium housed inside Franklin Science Center. After his retirement, Roddick still assisted the meet on occasions as a volunteer and starter. The Planetarium is now co-named in his honor (Dibert-Roddick Planetarium) and more information is available here.
