SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team went toe-to-toe with No. 12 IUP on Saturday, battling the Crimson Hawks for four quarters but ultimately coming up just short in a 28-26 setback on Family Day at Student Association at Seth Grove Stadium.
Shippensburg (1-2) out-gained IUP (3-0) by 74 yards (407-333), held a nine-minute advantage in time of possession, totaled 22 first downs (eight more than IUP) and won the turnover margin by one.
The Raiders never held a lead in the riveting conference crossover but successfully parried just about every thrust put forth by the Crimson Hawks – with the first advance occurring in the opening six minutes. Two plays after IUP quarterback Mason Maggs found tight end Connor Shamany for a 60-yard touchdown pass, tailback
Andre Weidman uncorked a 69-yard touchdown in which he ran virtually untouched down the middle of the field to make it a 7-7 game at the 10:13 mark of the first quarter.
SU was trailing 21-7 entering the final play before halftime when
Wilson Ingerski kicked a 31-yard field goal at the horn to make it an 11-point game at the intermission.
In the second half, the Raiders scored on all three of their trips to the red zone – beginning with a 1-yard touchdown rush by Weidman that made it a 21-17 game midway through the third quarter. After a muffed punt by IUP with 9:20 to go, SU got down to the Crimson Hawk 3-yard line before ultimately having to settle for a 29-yard Ingerski field goal that made it 21-20.
The Crimson Hawks benefited from a 44-yard return by Zach Boyd on the ensuing kickoff in which Ingerski saved a touchdown with a tackle near midfield. The ensuing 7-play, 53-yard drive resulted in an IUP touchdown and a 28-20 lead for the visitors.
Shippensburg got the ball back with 3:22 to go, and quarterback
Roman Jensen proceeded to march the Raiders 82 yards to paydirt. After a timeout with 49 seconds left, Jensen scrambled for a first down but had to leave the game for a play due to his helmet being knocked off on the tackle at the 1-yard line.
Backup quarterback
Colton Kilmer came off the bench and immediately threw a touchdown to
Ethan Carlos – marking the first collegiate scores for both men – and setting up the decisive two-point conversion. Jensen lofted a ball toward
Derek Guzman, but defensive lineman Braeden Walker dropped back into coverage and made a one-handed interception to seal the victory for the Crimson Hawks.
It was a good day for each team's No. 1 running back. Weidman finished with 122 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 7.6 yards per carry. He also caught two passes for 14 yards.
C.D. East native Leon Parson carried most of the weight for IUP, totaling 187 yards on 19 carries. Big plays proved vital for the visitors, and Parson had two of them in the second quarter – a 17-yard touchdown reception and a 57-yard touchdown run. When factoring in his kickoff returns, Parson finished the day with 258 all-purpose yards – the second-most in a game by a PSAC player this season.
Jensen finished 21-of-38 for 180 yards through the air and ran for 41 yards on the ground. The Crimson Hawks only completed eight passes in the game (including just two in the second half); but three went for touchdowns – all by Maggs – who finished with 127 yards.
Chris Adegunle remains the PSAC's leading receiver after Week 3; he finished Saturday's contest with game highs of eight receptions and 72 receiving yards. Adegunle has totaled a league-best 334 receiving yards through three games and ranks third with 20 receptions – a total just one off the PSAC lead.
Defensively,
Luke Hines recorded a wicked sack-fumble late in the second quarter that setup the field goal before halftime. Hines wrested the ball out of Maggs' hand just before he was set to make a throw and then corralled the ball as he fell to the ground to force the turnover.

Alex Sauve led the Raiders with seven tackles, while
Javani Mosley made six tackles and dazzled with three pass breakups.
Andrew Biddle and
Nate Myers each recorded six tackles; Myers recovered the fumble on IUP's muffed punt.
Ingerski, in addition to his two field goal makes and his tackle on a kickoff return, ran for 26 yards on a fourth-quarter fake punt that prolonged the drive that resulted in IUP's muffed punt, booted a 32-yard field goal off the right goalpost in the first quarter, and averaged 39 yards over the course of six punts.
Shippensburg begins Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium.
