SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Shippensburg University freshman goalkeeper Liv Schweighart (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) was named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II Defensive Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon by the league office.
 
Schweighart posted a shutout in SU's 2-0 victory over No. 3 Newberry Saturday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex. 
 
The freshman goalkeeper made two stops against the Wolves, extending her shutout streak to three games to begin her collegiate career. 
 
With Schweighart leading the way, the SU defense weathered four Newberry fourth quarter penalty corners to preserve the shutout – successfully quieting a Newberry attack that had outscored its opponents 17-0 entering play Saturday.
 
"It starts with the forwards," Schweighart said after Saturday's win. "We really value our tackle-back defense. If you lose the ball you're working hard to get it back. Obviously I can't do my job alone. [Our backs] played an amazing game today and [our midfielders] were holding down the sidelines and making sure that nothing gets past them. It takes a whole team and I am really proud of us."
 
Schweighart receives her first-ever national weekly distinction after also winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Defensive Athlete of the Week Tuesday.
 
She is the first Raider to be recognized with an NFHCA weekly honor since McKenna Boyle won Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 12, 2025 – a week in which she scored three goals and powered the Raiders to the 2025 PSAC Tournament title.
