SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University mourns the loss of Kristen Houck-Yeager '06/'07M, a former field hockey player for the Raiders. SU extends its condolences to her family and friends.
Yeager, a Central Berks Police Officer, was killed Friday night in the line of duty while responding to a call for service.
A 2006 graduate of Shippensburg with a degree in criminal justice, Yeager went on to earn her master's degree in administration of justice from Shippensburg in December 2007.
Yeager hailed from Reading and arrived at Shippensburg in 2002 after graduating from Exeter Township High School. She began as a forward with the field hockey team before later converting to defense – where she emerged as a starting center back for the Raiders.
In 2005, Yeager was a starting defender and a senior leader on the first SU Field Hockey team to win a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship.
The Central Berks Regional Police Department released the following in a statement late Friday: "Officer Yeager served our community with courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication. She answered the call to protect and serve each day, placing the safety of others above her own. Her commitment to her badge, her fellow officers, and the citizens she served will never be forgotten."
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags across the state to be flown at half-staff in honor of Yeager's sacrifice.
In a statement released Saturday, Shapiro said: "The women and men who wear the uniform put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe, and we owe them our deepest gratitude. Our hearts are with her loved ones and the entire Central Berks Regional Police family as they recover from this tragedy."
Flags were flown at half mast at Shippensburg University and around the Commonwealth on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
