SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team completed a run-rule victory and a late comeback win Tuesday afternoon to sweep its non-conference doubleheader against Bowie State, winning the opener 9-1 in six innings, before walking off Game 2, 5-4, on a windy day at Robb Field.
Shippensburg (20-10) ended the day with 18 hits, totaling 14 runs, while drawing 12 walks. Bowie State (10-16) finished the doubleheader with eight hits and plated five runs.
Rilee Ehrlacher went 4-for-6 at the plate, with a double, two RBIs and scored three runs.
Brie Wilmot,
Lindsey Haser and
Emilee Sullivan each went 3-for-7. Wilmot had a home run and five RBIs, including the walk-off hit in Game 2. Haser recorded three RBIs and Sullivan had a double and scored three runs.
Hayward earned both wins in the circle, pitching ten innings. She struck out a total of nine batters on the day and allowed just one walk and five hits, with four of those coming in Game 1.
Shippensburg returns to action on Friday at 1 p.m. for a road doubleheader at East Stroudsburg.
Game 1: SHIP 9, BOWIE STATE 1
Bowie State got on the board first in the top of the fourth after a Raider error and a pair of singles to make it 1-0. The Raiders answered right away in the bottom of the fourth;
Sarah Sabocsik drew a walk and
Caitlyn Martell followed with her third home run of the season to make it 2-1.
SU increased its lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Reagan Bauman drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single from Sullivan and a hit by pitch to put Ehrlacher on base. Haser recorded a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Wilmot launched her fourth home run of the season to clear the bases, 6-1.
In the top of the sixth the Bulldogs had two runners on base after a pair of singles, but the SU defense kept the score at 6-1.
The Raiders scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Bauman and Sullivan hit back-to-back singles. Ehrlacher doubled to score a run and make it 7-1. Haser brought the final two runs across the plate with a single to end the game via run-rule.
Hayward got the win in the circle for the Raiders, striking out five batters, walking none and allowing just four hits. She did not allow a hit in the first four innings.
Bauman, Ehrlacher, Sullivan and Wilmot each recorded two hits. Wilmot and Haser led the team with three RBIs.
Game 2: SHIP 5, BOWIE STATE 4
The Bulldogs quickly got ahead in the first inning after drawing a pair of walks and recording a single to score the first run. With the bases loaded, Bowie State drew another walk to make it 2-0. The last run of the inning came on a wild pitch to increase the lead to three.
The Raiders drew two walks in the bottom of the first but were unable to score.
Bowie State made it 4-0 in the top of the third inning after a leadoff home run. The Raiders had two runners on base in the bottom of the third, but the Bulldog defense kept SU scoreless.
The Bulldogs threatened to increase their lead in the top of the fourth after a leadoff hit by pitch and walk. Hayward made her second appearance in the circle and quickly worked out of the inning with a double play and a ground out.
The Raiders saw their first runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Grace Ciochetto, who earned her first career start, reached on a fielder's choice play.
Leah Schwalm recorded her second triple of the season to put the Raiders on the board, 4-1.
Gianna Cimino immediately followed with a double to cut the SU deficit to two.
The Raiders came within one in the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff double from Sullivan and a RBI single from Ehrlacher.
In the top of the seventh, Bowie State looked to increase its lead after a single, walk and a sacrifice bunt, but a foul out kept SU within one at 4-3.
With one out, Ehrlacher and Haser notched back-to-back singles. Wilmot came up to the plate with the go-ahead run on first. Haser stole second to put both Raiders in scoring position. Wilmot hit a single to centerfield to end the game at 5-4.
Ehrlacher and Haser led the SU offense with two hits apiece. Six different Raiders recorded a hit.
Hayward got her second win of the day, pitching the last four innings, striking out four batters and only allowing one hit.
Kaira Zamadics got the start in the circle, pitching two innings. She allowed four hits and recorded a strikeout.
Mya Parkinson pitched an inning for SU, facing six batters and not allowing a hit.
