SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team completed its regular season home schedule by splitting a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader against Shepherd Thursday afternoon at Fairchild Field.
Â
Shippensburg (28-18, 15-11 PSAC East) thumped Shepherd (27-21, 13-13) 11-4 in Game 1 before dropping a wild Game 2, 10-7, in eight innings. The split means Shippensburg can clinch a PSAC Tournament berth with a win tomorrow or a Bloomsburg loss.
Â
Ty Sherman and
Thomas Cano-Piszel combined to drive in 10 runs during the doubleheader.
Â
Sherman smashed a three-run home run in both halves of the twinbill, finishing 4-for-8 (.500) with six RBIs. Cano-Piszel batted 4-for-6 (.667) with six RBIs and three runs scored, including a missile off his bat for a solo home run in the opener.
Â
Conner Barto recorded his PSAC-leading ninth victory with six solid innings in Game 1.
Â
Shippensburg will conclude its regular season slate with a doubleheader Friday at Shepherd beginning at 1 p.m.
Â
Game 1: Shippensburg 11, Shepherd 4
Â
A seven-run bottom of the second powered the Raiders to victory in the opener.
Â
Cano-Piszel's solo blast in the first canceled out a Shepherd run and set the stage for the Raiders' big rally.
Â
Evan Shoffler began the second-inning fireworks with a two-run single, and Sherman added on with a three-run bomb to blow the game open. The Raiders piled on additional runs courtesy of a
Will Oates double and a
Brady Harbach, giving the Raiders an 8-1 cushion.
Â
The Raiders answered a two-spot from the Rams in the third with two more in the home half of the frame.
Â
Cano-Piszel brought home
Jake Pope with a sacrifice fly, and Sherman singled home another run to make it a 10-3 game.
Kyle Ausgotharp doubled home a run in the fourth to round out the Raider scoring.
Â
The eleven runs came in support of Barto, who allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six over six frames.
Â
Sherman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener, while Cano-Piszel finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Â
Oates contributed two doubles, scored twice and drove in a run. Â
Â
Game 2: Shepherd 10, Shippensburg 7
Â
Shippensburg stormed back from a 7-1 deficit to tie the game and force extras before Shepherd's Nik Rubendall blasted a decisive go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning.
Â
Shepherd's Wyatt Lamb took advantage of a strong wind blowing out to left field to add onto a 3-1 Ram lead in the fifth, clearing the fence with the bases loaded for a grand slam to make it 7-1.
Â
The six-run deficit did little to deter the Raider offense, as they sent 12 men to the plate and scored six runs to tie it in their very next turn.
Â
The outburst began with a walk, a
Mike Heckman bunt single and a hit batter to load the bases with no one out. Cano-Piszel followed with a two-run double and Sherman cleared the bases with a mammoth three-run blast to quickly make it a one-run game, 7-6.
Â
The Raiders loaded the bases again later on in the frame, this time with two outs. Oates scored from third on a balk to bring the hosts all the way back, 7-7.
Â
The game then turned into a battle of the bullpens.
Nathan Lake and
Jack Robinson held the Rams scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, with Robinson getting a key strikeout to send the game to the bottom of the seventh still even.
Â
Meanwhile, Shepherd's Cooper Bryan was lights out, setting down a Raider lineup that had all the momentum from the sixth inning on – including a one-two-three bottom of the seventh to force extras.
Â
Rubendall's eighth-inning longball put Bryan in line for the win, and the right-hander then sealed it with a perfect bottom of the eighth.
Â
Rubendall homered twice in Game 2, giving the Rams an initial 2-0 lead with two-run blast in the top of the first inning. He finished 2-for-3 at the dish with six RBIs and three runs scored.
Â
Lamb finished 3-for-4 in the nightcap with four driven in.
Â
Shippensburg starting pitcher
Jonah Mayer fanned six in 4.1 innings pitched.
