RECAP: Hayward’s perfect game, Zamadics’ no-hitter help Softball blank Mansfield, 6-0 and 8-0

Hayward and Zamadics combine for 12 hitless innings in the circle

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team picked up a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division victories on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over Mansfield, defeating the visiting Mountaineers by scores of 6-0 and 8-0 at Robb Field. The Game 2 win came in five innings.

Shippensburg's (24-12, 12-8 PSAC East) wins were highlighted by a pair of impressive pitching performances from Dani Hayward and Kaira Zamadics.

Hayward pitched a perfect game in Game 1, striking out six batters, allowing no walks or hits. This marks just the first perfect game in program history in 20 years, since Dani Shields did so with a 1-0 win vs. Kutztown on May 6, 2006 in a PSAC Tournament game at Lock Haven.

It was the first seven-inning no-hitter for Shippensburg since May 9, 2014, when Hayward's pitching coach, Emily (Estep) Goshorn pitched a 2-0 victory against IUP, allowing no hits and walking three batters in an NCAA Tournament game played at Robb Field.

Zamadics got the win in the circle in Game 2, throwing her first career no-hitter. She matched her season high with four strikeouts, allowing just one walk. This marks her third career shutout and third of the season.

Both performances in the circle marked the first no-hitters of any kind for SU since May 5, 2017, when Chloe Collins pitched a five-inning no-hitter against Lincoln.

The SU offense totaled 16 hits on the day.

Reagan Bauman led the Raider offense going 4-for-6 at the plate, totaling two RBIs.

Caitlyn Martell, Rilee Ehrlacher and Gianna Cimino added three hits apiece. Martell recorded a double and a pair of singles, recording an RBI.

Ehrlacher went 3-for-6 at the plate, notching her 100th career hit in Game 2. Cimino finished the day with a home run, triple and a single, totaling six RBIs.

Shippensburg will travel to Frostburg State on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

The Raiders scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the third inning. Ehrlacher singled followed by a sacrifice bunt from Sarah Sabocsik and an RBI single from Martell to make it 1-0.

SU increased its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Raiders had the bases loaded after a Martell single, a hit by pitch and a Mansfield error. Bauman recorded a single to drive in a pair of runs and make it 3-0. Emilee Sullivan followed with an RBI single to increase the lead to four. Cimino then cleared the bases with a triple to make it 6-0.

Ehrlacher recorded a single in the bottom of the sixth, but three fly outs kept the Raiders from scoring.
