SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team ran into a pair of red-hot arms as it dropped both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader to Bloomsburg Friday afternoon at Fairchild Field, 8-2 and 6-1.
Â
Shippensburg (17-8, 4-2 PSAC East) totaled just three runs in 14 innings against Bloomsburg (13-6, 3-3) starting pitchers Brandon Wozniak and Andrew Armstrong, who delivered back-to-back complete game performances.
Â
Wozniak surrendered just two earned runs over seven innings in Game 1. He scattered eight SU hits, issued one walk and struck out three. He improved his record to 3-0 with the win.
Â
Game 2 starter Andrew Armstrong was even better. He allowed just one earned run on five hits and blanked the Raider bats over the final six frames. Armstrong walked two and recorded eight strikeouts. Â
Â
SU catcher
Will Oates hammered a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning of Game 1, and
AJ Wenrich stroked an RBI triple in the first inning of Game 2 to account for the Raiders' only runs.
Â
Meanwhile, the Huskies took full advantage of their opportunities offensively, scoring half their runs in Game 1 (and six runs total) with two outs. Bloom was also 8-for-10 on the day on stolen base attempts, including six-for-six in Game 1.
Â
Leadoff man Grant Russo had three hits, three stolen bases and three runs scored and took away several Raider hits patrolling centerfield. Joe Levis had a big day out of the No. 9-spot in the Husky lineup. The catcher went a combined 4-for-7 with five runs scored and three driven in.
Â
Second baseman Matt Freda finished 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored, three walks and two stolen bases.
Â
Oates led the SU offense, going 3-for-5 (.600) with a pair of walks. He doubled ahead of Wenrich's first inning triple to plate the Raiders only Game 2 run.
Â
On the bump for the Raiders in Game 1,
Jacob Dennis allowed one earned run and fanned four in 2.1 innings of work in relief of starting pitcher
Conner Barto. Relief pitcher
Dom DiBlasi tossed a scoreless seventh.
Â
Jonah Mayer (4.1 IP, 3 ER) pitched to some hard luck in Game 2.
Nathan Lake and
Jack Robinson combined for just one earned run in 2.2 innings out of the SU 'pen.
Â
The road half of the weekend series has been postponed from its original scheduled date of Saturday to Sunday. Game 1 from Bloomsburg's Danny Litwhiler Field is set for 1 p.m.
