RECAP: Baseball wraps up weekend series sweep of Kutztown, 9-0 and 13-3

SU outscored Golden Bears 22-3 in DH, Maksimik tossed first career shutout

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team completed a weekend series sweep to begin Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play by taking both halves of a doubleheader against Kutztown Saturday at Fairchild Field, 9-0 and 13-3.

Shippensburg (17-5, 4-0 PSAC East) outscored Kutztown (7-10, 0-4) 22-3 over the course of the twinbill. The Raiders posted double-digit hit totals in both games and got outstanding performances from both of its starting pitchers.

Game 1 starter Kaleb Maksimik was lights out, registering his first career complete game shutout in his first PSAC East start, while Brenden Anderson held the Golden Bears to just three earned runs over five solid frames to earn the victory in Game 2.

Eight of the nine Shippensburg starters had at least one hit in both contests. Caden Lloyd, Will Oates, Lucas Ream and Ty Sherman totaled three hits Saturday.

Shippensburg returns to action Tuesday for a nine-inning matchup at No. 28-ranked Seton Hill. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

Game 1: Shippensburg 9, Kutztown 0

Maksimik was nearly untouchable on the mound in the opener, scattering four singles and striking out five over seven frames. He did not allow a baserunner to reach second base in the contest.

Offensively, the Raiders scored in every inning except the opening frame, posting single runs in the second and third, followed by crooked numbers in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

Lloyd got the scoring underway with a second inning RBI single, and later provided the biggest highlight of the game: taking the KU defense by surprise with a straight steal of home during a two-run bottom of the sixth.

Jake Pope stroked an RBI triple during a three-run rally in the fourth, while Evan Shoffler, Brady Harbach and Ream added collected RBI singles in the game.

Kyle Ausgotharp went 2-for-4 in Game 1 with a pair of runs scored.

Maksimik improved to 3-1 on the season with the victory.

Game 2: Shippensburg 13, Kutztown 3

Kutztown starter Eddie Frye went toe-to-toe with Anderson through the first three innings of the nightcap before the Raider offense caught fire, plating 11 runs over the course of a pair of bat-around frames in their next two turns.

A three-run, bases-clearing double off the bat of AJ Wenrich highlighted a six-run rally in the fourth.

SU added five more runs in the fifth. Mason Morris started the scoring with an RBI double, while Shoffler, Mike Heckman and Lloyd added RBI singles in the frame.

Sherman went 3-for-3 at the plate in Game 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Lloyd reached base in all four of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Ream (2-for-4) also recorded a multi-hit game.

Anderson held the Golden Bear bats to six hits, striking out two and issuing one walk over his five innings of work. Nathan Lake and Dom DiBlasi contributed scoreless innings of relief.
