SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
AJ Wenrich blasted a two-run homer run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Shippensburg University Baseball a come-from-behind victory in Game 2, helping the Raiders secure a doubleheader split against Gannon in nonconference action Saturday at Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (4-2) dropped Saturday's opener 11-3 before salvaging the weekend series versus Gannon (2-1) with a dramatic victory in the nightcap, 3-2.
Jonah Mayer got the ball for the Raiders in Game 2 for his first career start and managed to quiet the Gannon bats, holding the visitors to just five hits and two runs over 5.1 innings. The freshman righthander walked two during that span and recorded six strikeouts.
A swinging bunt base hit with two outs in the fourth inning from Gannon's Brenden Koroly drove in the game's first run, but
Evan Shoffler led off the home half with a loud triple to the left centerfield gap and crossed home on a two-out double from
Brady Harbach.
Gannon took the lead once again in the top of the sixth through an RBI single off the bat of Dom Costello.
The Raiders bottom of the sixth inning rally came with two outs. After a double play cleared the bases,
Mason Morris worked a two-out walk, causing the Golden Knights to dip into their bullpen.
Wenrich attacked Gannon lefty Logan Ayres early, ripping the first pitch from the left-hander over the fence in straightaway left for the game-winning home run.
Bryce Amos, who came on for Mayer in the sixth, retired the Golden Knights in order in the seventh to earn the victory. He did not allow a baserunner in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Gannon righty Nolan Smith earned a no decision despite logging 5.2 innings on an efficient 61 total pitches. He scattered three hits and was charged with two earned runs.
After slugging 15 hits in Friday's series opener, the Golden Knight bats were back at it in Game 1, totaling 11 runs on 14 hits. Gannon starter Jacob Engel was outstanding, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits over 5.1 innings.
Morris homered for the Raiders in Saturday's opener, while freshman
Caden Lloyd tallied his first two career hits – a triple and an RBI single.
Harbach recorded multi-hit efforts in both halves of the twin bill, going 4-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored.
