Shippensburg University mourns the loss of Heather Chantiles Light '08, a former softball player for the Raiders. SU extends its condolences to her family and friends.
Chantiles Light is the 2006Â Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Her 112 hits that season remain the all-time PSAC single-season record. She earned NFCA All-America First Team and CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors as a captain and outfielder for a Raider team that went 42-20 and competed in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament.
Â
She played for the Raiders from 2004-06 and remains the school record holder for career batting average (minimum 200 at-bats). She hit .472 (136 hits in 288 at-bats) in her three seasons and compiled a .492 career on-base percentage, which is second in school history.
Â
Light graduated from Shippensburg in December 2008 with an elementary education degree and a minor in reading. She later earned her master's degree from Messiah.
As a high school athlete, Light was a star player at Central Dauphin High School. This past August, she was named one of the top 25 Mid-Penn Conference softball players of the century byÂ
PennLive.
Chantiles passed away Friday after a courageous battle with breast cancer.Â
