SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team slugged 13 extra-base hits Saturday in a home doubleheader sweep of Saint Michael's, posting victories of 17-4 and 7-6 in action on a sunny February afternoon at Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (3-0) totaled 26 hits in the twinbill and had a 10-run fourth inning in the opening game to highlight its potent offensive attack. The slugging output featured seven doubles, three triples and three home runs. Four different Raiders had at least four hits in the doubleheader. SU also stole six bases and drew nine walks – giving the squad a .470 on-base percentage for the weekend.
Saint Michael's (0-3) scored seven runs against Raider starting pitchers but managed just three over the course of 8.2 innings worked by the bullpen. The Purple Knights took first-inning leads in all three games of the series, including two-run firsts in both games Saturday, but could not maintain their advantages.
Sophomores
Evan Shoffler and
Will Oates had terrific weekends atop the Raider order.
Shoffler, the leadoff batter, reached base six times Saturday, going for 4-for-6 with three extra-base hits, four RBIs, two walks, a sacrifice fly, a stolen base and six runs scored. He homered in two of his first three at-bats in the nightcap – the first two round-trippers of his collegiate career.
Oates reached base six times, going 5-for-8 with three doubles, a walk, four RBIs and three runs scored. He caught Game 1 and served as the designated hitter in Game 2. He was 4-for-5 with all four of his RBIs in the opener.
Redshirt-sophomore
Brady Harbach was a third Raider to reach six times, collecting four singles and two walks while scoring four runs. Harbach is the team's leading hitter through the first three games of the season, having batted 6-for-9 at the plate (.667).
Junior
Ty Sherman matched Oates with a five-hit day; he was 4-for-4 with two RBIs in the nightcap and finished a home run short of the cycle. With the score 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning in the finale, Sherman singled home Harbach for what proved to be the winning run.
Sophomore
Thomas Cano-Piszel was 3-for-6 with a double, a walk and four RBIs. Senior
AJ Wenrich torpedoed a home run in the nightcap and had three RBIs on the day.
Eight Raiders spent time on the bump Saturday. The two victories were achieved by pitchers who missed last season due to injury. Redshirt-sophomore
Kaleb Maksimik won Game 1 by throwing 1.2 scoreless innings. Fellow redshirt-sophomore
Brady Kain got the win in Game 2 by scattering a run on three hits in three innings while striking out three.
Richard Gilboy was 3-for-4 in Game 2 for the Purple Knights, including a two-run double in the top of the seventh that tied the game at 6-6.
Shippensburg will host Gannon for a three-game series next weekend that begins at 2 p.m. Friday with a single nine-inning game at Fairchild Field.
