The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team clinched the No. 1 seed and the right to host next week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament by taking down No. 5 IUP in its regular season finale, 2-0, Friday afternoon at George P. Miller Stadium.
Shippensburg (14-2, 8-1 PSAC) scored twice in the first six minutes of the second half to deliver the victory with goals from
Elaina Fragassi and
McKenna Boyle.
Following a first half stalemate, SU unlocked the IUP defense with a contender for goal of the season in the 33rd minute.
The brilliant team sequence began with
Juana Caracotche Picone delivering a long hit from midfield onto the tape of Boyle's stick in the circle.
Boyle settled it nicely, quickly drawing two IUP defenders before laying the ball off to Fragassi to stuff it home.
Three minutes later, the Raiders then took advantage of their only penalty corner of the match, as Boyle rocketed a shot attempt off
Emily Bitters' insert that beat IUP goalie Celeste Pagliaroli and doubled the SU lead.
Shippensburg had to buckle down defensively against the Crimson Hawks, weathering a total of eight IUP penalty corners – including four in the final five minutes of the match and two in the final 30 seconds.
Senior
Grace Meinke extended her shutout streak to four games with the most impressive outing of her SU career, which included a season-high eight saves.
Next up, the Raiders will host a PSAC Tournament semifinal against an opponent yet to be determined Friday at noon at Robb Sports Complex. The winner of that match will advance to the PSAC Championship Game to be contested noon Sunday.
