SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team solved the strong defensive efforts of Frostburg State in the final minute of the third quarter to earn a 1-0 victory over the Bobcats in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action Wednesday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (12-2, 6-1 PSAC) forward
McKenna Boyle knocked down a blocked attempt on goal from teammate
Elaina Fragassi and slotted the ball past Frostburg (6-9, 1-5) goalie Jenna Yazzetti with 36 seconds remaining in the third frame for the game-winner.
The Raiders had to battle to solve Yazzetti, forcing the Bobcat netminder into 18 saves.
Yazzetti made a strong early impression, making a fantastic stick save to deny
Juana Caracotche Picone on a penalty stroke in the final moments of the first quarter.
The Bobcats elected to sit back and crowd their own circle for large stretches. As a result, the Raiders outshot the opposition 32-to-3 overall and 19-to-1 in attempts on goal.
Anne Gardner led the Raiders with five shots on target Wednesday.
Grace Meinke, making her third consecutive start in the Raider cage, posted her second consecutive shutout. She was called into action just once, saving Frostburg State's lone shot on goal.
The Raiders clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament with the victory.
Elsewhere in the PSAC, No. 1 Kutztown defeated No. 3 East Stroudsburg 3-2 Wednesday at KU's Andre Reed Stadium. That result knocked ESU into third place in the conference standings, while SU and KU remain tied at the top with one league loss apiece.
The Raiders return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mansfield.
