SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team capitalized on its significant possession advantage Wednesday afternoon by scoring three goals in the final 50 minutes of its 3-1 victory over Mansfield in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at David See Field.
Shippensburg (4-8-3, 2-8-2) held Mansfield (2-15-0, 0-13-0) without a shot or corner kick in the first half but did not take the lead until just 4:28 before halftime, when
Julie Ifantis chested down a loose ball and struck a volley into the right side of the net for her first collegiate goal. The opportunity came about after an
Andrea Black cross was headed away by a Mountie defender and the carom traveled toward Ifantis.
The fifth goal of the year by
Paige Marek made it 2-0 in the 60th minute.
Hannah Menicheschi sent a great pass up the center of the field that Marek nudged past Mountaineer goalkeeper Angel Gule and into the back of the net.
A resolute Mountaineer squad made it interesting in the final minutes. A shot from the box by Brynn Knepp was stopped by Raider goalkeeper
Mae Leedy, but the rebound was sent home by Mikayla Britz to make it 2-1 with 4:40 left on the clock.
Shippensburg answered less than a minute to re-gain its two-goal advantage, as
Lannah Werynski finished a rebound for her second goal of the year that rounded out the scoring.
Gabby Masters, whose initial shot was saved by Gule, earned the assist on the play.
Leedy earned the victory in her first collegiate start.
Shots on target were 10-2 in Shippensburg's favor; the Raiders also finished with a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. SU was also whistled for offsides six times.
Shippensburg is back in action at noon Saturday with a road match at No. 16 West Chester.
