The Shippensburg University field hockey team nullified the No. 6-ranked West Chester attack in an impressive 2-0 road victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup Saturday at a chilly Vonnie Gros Field.
Shippensburg (9-0, 3-1 PSAC) held West Chester (8-4, 1-3) to just one shot – zero on goal – and zero penalty corners. The stifling defensive effort was bookended by goals from
Anne Gardner and
Juana Caracotche Picone.
The Raiders scored early, capitalizing on a West Chester turnover in the ninth minute.
Madison Fissel began the SU counter by winning the ball in midfield.
Hannah White later stepped in front of an attempted West Chester clearance, sped into the circle and delivered a pinpoint centering pass.
Gardner smashed a one-time shot to make it 1-0. White was credited with the assist.
The score remained the same until the final ten minutes of regulation.
Shippensburg extended its advantage with a beautifully executed penalty corner.
Emily Bitters' insert touched the stick of three different Raider attackers, making it around-the-horn before finding its way to Caracotche Picone on the far side of the circle.
SU's quick and decisive passing gave Caracotche Picone enough time to rocket a low attempt inside the far post.
The Raiders maintained a 6-0 edge in penalty corners in the contest. SU recorded nine total shots, including four on target.
West Chester goalie Erin O'Brien finished with two saves.
Next up, Shippensburg travels to Millersville Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start.
