Ashley Laukus and
Shaela Kruskie won the high jump and 5K respectively with new personal bests on Saturday to highlight the day for Shippensburg University women's indoor track & field team at the Art Gulden Invitational, a scored meet hosted by Bucknell.
Laukus eclipsed 5 feet, 7 ¼ inches (1.71 meters) on her first attempt at the height to cap off the best performance of her collegiate career. She moved from sixth place into second place all-time at Shippensburg, trailing only school-record holder Rebekah Newhart (5 feet, 7 ¾ inches in 2010). The NCAA provisional qualifier puts Laukus into a tie for 12th place on the NCAA Division II national performance list.
She cleared five heights on the day, beginning at 5 feet, 1 inch (1.55 meters), with only miss along the way. Laukus made three attempts to get over the bar at 5 feet, 8 inches (1.73 meters) but was unsuccessful.
Kruskie shattered her 5K PR by more than 80 seconds with a time of 17:38.12 to achieve a two-second victory over Bloomsburg's Olivia Magagna – the runner-up at this year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Cross Country Championships. The performance was the second straight week in which Kruskie delivered a huge PR in a distance race (she ran the 3K last week at Alvernia).
With her run, Kruskie moves into the No. 8 slot all-time at Shippensburg in the 5K; her time with the flat-track to banked/oversized track conversion translates to 17:30.08.
Other standouts in the distance and mid-distance events included
Mya Trotty achieving a 3K conference qualifier with a fourth-place time of 10:25.07,
Mary Stoltz placing sixth in the 800 with a PSAC cut of 2:22.91, and
Victoria Bartholomew notching her PSAC 5K qualifier by running fourth in 18:28.92.
Emily Calamia improved her season best in the 400 meters with a fifth-pace time of 59.45 seconds and also paced the Raiders in the 200 meters with a conference cut of 26.04 seconds.
Alyssa Wert returned to action and picked up her PSAC qualifier in the 400 by running 1:00.09.
Madison Malcolm tied for seventh in the 60-meter hurdle finals with a time of 9.16 seconds after qualifying in 9.18 seconds.
Calamia,
Melanie Barger, Malcolm and Wert teamed up for a second-place time of 4:03.25 in the 4x400-meter relay.
