SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Graduate Ian Sherlock won his third consecutive conference title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday and senior Mason Boyd shattered his school record in the decathlon and became a five-time all-conference finisher to highlight the day for Shippensburg University at the 2025 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships taking place at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Sherlock led wire-to-wire in the steeplechase as he pursued a time that would hopefully be enough to get him into NCAA National Championship consideration. Dealing with windy conditions Friday night, Sherlock ran 9:00.38 – which will have him on the national bubble – as he posted a convincing victory by more than 20 seconds.

It caps a historic PSAC steeplechase career for Sherlock, who finishes as a five-time scorer in the event and a four-time All-PSAC finisher. In addition to his three consecutive steeplechase titles, Sherlock finished third in 2022 and fifth in 2021. He becomes the first and only Raider to win three steeplechase championships and becomes just the second PSAC athlete to do so in the last 30 years – joining Lock Haven's Nick Hilton (2009-11).

Boyd and his compatriots in the multi completed what is assuredly the best decathlon competition in the history of the PSAC. He shattered his school record by more than 270 points, and his total score of 6,955 points broke the previous PSAC meet record.

It resulted in third place in 2025, however, as Lock Haven's Matthew Muthler broke the 35-year-old conference record in the event by scoring 7,355 points while Edinboro's Connor Munson was the runner-up with a staggering 7,011 points. Slippery Rock's Logan Anderson, meanwhile, was only six points behind Boyd in fourth place with 6,949 points.

That score of 6,949 points equals what had been the championship meet record for the modern decathlon set by IUP's Brian Spickler – a mark that had lasted for 28 years.

Boyd finishes as a five-time All-PSAC finisher in the decathlon, making him the only man in league history to be able to claim that distinction. He won the PSAC championship in 2024 and 2023 and was the runner-up in 2022 and 2021.

Shippensburg recorded two other scoring performances on Friday, as Gian Greggo and Donovan Kitchen scored in the discus. Greggo made it two straight days with a PR, landing a fourth-place discus throw of 163 feet (49.69 meters) that exceeded his personal best by nearly six feet. Kitchen, who was fourth in the discus last year, placed eighth this year on a top mark of 153 feet, 4 inches (46.75 meters).

Among prelims, the Raiders advanced nine performances to finals and had the 4x100-meter relay earn the No. 2 seed for Saturday.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Jeovaughni Daniel and Bernard Bell III qualified 2-3 for Saturday's finals. Daniel's time of 14.40 seconds moved him up one spot to No. 4 all-time at SU in the event. Bell III ran 14.51 seconds, which is just .01 seconds off his PR.

Gabriel Lewis delivered a personal best in the 200 meters to qualify as the No. 4 seed by running 21.28 seconds. By improving his PR by two-tenths of a second, he moved from eighth up to second in school history for the event.

As a sign of how fast the 200 was on Friday, Jae Galloway and Quinton Townsend each ran new PRs – posting identical times of 21.51 seconds that tie for ninth all-time at SU – but only managed 11th and 12th place overall.

Lewis and Galloway each qualified for the finals of the 100-meter dash, earning the No. 4 and No. 8 seeds respectively. Townsend made it back in the 400 – he snuck the No. 8 seed for the finals by running 49.25 seconds.

Robbie Hrabosky II will be the top seed in the 400-meter hurdles finals after running 53.38 seconds, while Travis Wilk will be the No. 3 seed after posting a time of 54.41 seconds. Both men won their qualifying heat.

Owen Shrader impressed in the 800-meter prelims and earned the No. 3 overall seed for the finals after winning his qualifying heat with a time of 1:54.45.

Shippensburg sits in third place with 45 points entering Saturday and has a tall task ahead if it is to extend its championship streak. East Stroudsburg currently leads with 61.5 points while Slippery Rock is right behind the Warriors with 58.5 points.

Action resumes at 11 a.m. Saturday.

PSAC Decathlon Notes:
* Lock Haven's Matthew Muthler surpassed the 1990 all-time PSAC record of IUP's Bob Babiak by 63 points.
* The decathlon has been contested at the PSAC Outdoor Championships since 1976 – the year before the league officially switched to meters from yards. In that inaugural PSAC multi, the legendary Mike Kowal scored 7,038 points – the only other time prior to this week that any PSAC Championships decathlon had surpassed 7,000 points.
* Slippery Rock's Zack Duda's fifth-place score of 6,729 points would have been enough to win the event in four of the last five seasons and is 408 points higher than any other fifth-place score in the history of the league championships (6,321 points in 1997).
* Lock Haven's Nick Bellomo's sixth-place score of 6,709 points is 424 points higher than any other sixth-place score in the history of the league championships (6,285 points in 1997).
* This is the second time in league history that seven men have score at least 6,000 points at the league championships in the decathlon; 2012 was the other occasion [Ship's Austin Strine was seventh that year with 6,124 points].
* Prior to this year, the only time in league history that the three All-PSAC finishers in the decathlon scored at least 6,500 points was in 2011 (Wert, 6785; Ammann, 6637; Johnson, 6516).
