RECAP: Baseball holds on to win Game 2, splits weekend series against No. 10 West Chester

Raiders take nightcap 8-5, Wenrich launches three-run homer in win

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team took Game 2 of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader Saturday to split the weekend series against No. 10 West Chester at Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (19-12, 6-6 PSAC East) won the nightcap 8-5 thanks to outstanding defense and clutch two-out hitting, while West Chester (25-7, 8-4) took the opener by a 7-4 final score.

Shippensburg hosted the doubleheader but served as the road team for scoring purposes. The twinbill was originally scheduled to be held at West Chester but was moved due to rain.

The biggest two-out hit of the nightcap came off the bat of AJ Wenrich, a long three-run bomb to left that helped put the game out of reach. Senior shortstop Carter Hinds turned a pair of important double plays to end the fifth and the sixth to keep the Golden Rams at bay.

Hinds (3-for-7) led SU with three hits in Saturday's doubleheader. Sophomore Ty Sherman and freshman Mason Morris finished 2-for-6 with three runs scored.

Shippensburg returns to action Tuesday when it welcomes Pitt-Johnstown for a nine-inning, nonconference tilt. First pitch from Fairchild Field is set for 3 p.m.

Game 1: West Chester 7, Shippensburg 4

Five of West Chester's 10 hits went for extra bases as the Golden Rams took Saturday's opener, 7-4.

The Raiders tied the score at 1-1 on a second-inning RBI single off the bat of graduate Carter Arbuthnot, but could not compete with the opposition's extra-base prowess.

West Chester recorded two RBI doubles and an RBI triple during a three-run third, and catcher Darius Troche launched a two-run homer in the sixth.

Sophomore Ty Sherman tripled and scored on Arbuthnot's base hit, while sophomore Erby Weller doubled for the Raiders.

West Chester handed junior starting pitcher J.T. Weaver his first loss of the season, dropping his record to 5-1. Weaver posted four strikeouts over five frames.

West Chester's Anthony Boccio went 3-for-3 at the dish with three driven in. Casey Vaughan was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Golden Ram righty Nick Noga fanned six over four innings of two-run ball to earn the win.

Game 2: Shippensburg 8, West Chester 5

The Raiders scored eight straight runs to erase a 3-1 West Chester lead and salvage a doubleheader split.

Freshman Evan Shoffler doubled and scored in the third, and SU took advantage of two WCU miscues to take the lead during a three-run top of the fourth.

Freshman Kyle Ausgotharp and Hinds notched RBI singles in the frame.

Freshman Will Oates recorded a two-out RBI double in the fifth to extend the SU lead, 5-3, and Wenrich crushed a two-out longball an inning later to make it 8-3 Shippensburg.

West Chester plated runs in the sixth and seventh, allowing them to bring the potential go-ahead run to the dish in the final frame, but junior Jack Robinson struck out John Dunion swinging to end it.

Dunion homered for WCU earlier in the game.

Robinson shouldered a heavy load to earn the victory out of the Shippensburg bullpen. The right-hander threw 66 pitches in what was his longest outing of the season (3.2 innings). He allowed four hits and two runs.
