SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team used an eight-run frame to win Game 1 and earn a split against No. 20 Millersville in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on a warm afternoon at Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (17-10, 4-4 PSAC East) trailed 6-1 in the opener before reeling off 11 straight runs, including a eight-run rally in the fifth, to take the lead and hold on for a 12-10 Game 1 win.
Millersville (21-4, 7-1) never trailed in the nightcap, plating three in the top of the first on its way to a 6-2 triumph.
Senior
Gio Calamia went 4-for-9 in the doubleheader with two runs scored and three RBIs, including a Game 2 homer.
Freshman
Evan Shoffler went 3-for-6 and matched a career high with four RBIs in the opener.
Junior
AJ Wenrich finished 3-for-8 with two runs and two RBI. Wenrich also went deep in Game 2.
Shippensburg returns to action with a home doubleheader Friday against nationally-ranked West Chester. First pitch of Game 1 is slated for 1 p.m.
Game 1: Shippensburg 12, Millersville 10
The Raiders set the stage for their big fifth inning with a three-run fourth. Shoffler ripped a two-run double to plate sophomore

Carter Hinds, who both singled in the frame.
After freshman
Will Oates reached on a two-out throwing error, Calamia stroked an opposite field RBI single to cut the Ship deficit to two, 6-4.
SU started the fifth with back-to-back walks, and sophomore
Mason Morris reached on a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out.
Millersville retired the next two batters, the second on a RBI sac fly from Shoffler, only to see the next eight men reach base.
Junior
Mike Heckman kept the train moving with a clutch line drive back through the middle to tie the score, and Oates then punched an RBI single to center to give SU its first lead, 7-6.
Calamia and Wenrich followed with RBI singles, and graduate
Carter Arbuthnot reached on a costly error that plated an unearned run.
Three consecutive walks with the bases loaded led to additional unearned runs.
Millersville fought back, bringing the potential go-ahead run to plate in the seventh in the form of PSAC home run and RBI leader Matthew Williams, but SU junior
Brenden Anderson retired him on a hot-shot lineout to second baseman Shoffler for the final out.
Sophomore
Conner Barto, who pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fifth during his three innings of work, earned the win for SU in relief.
Sherman reached base in all four of his Game 1 plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored. Shoffler went 2-for-3 in addition to his four RBIs.
Game 2: Millersville 6, Shippensburg 2
Calamia and Wenrich hit back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the first to answer Millersville's three-run top half, but the Raiders were unable were unable to score the rest of the way.
Millersville starter Garet Blankenbiller scattered two runs on four hits in four innings, while lefty Evan Rishell delivered 2.2 scoreless in relief to earn the save.
Jimmy Kirk stroked a two-run double to put the Marauders in front, and Millersville catcher and Shippensburg High School graduate Troy Chamberlin cleared the fence with a line drive to left in the seventh for his first collegiate home run to bring about the 6-2 final.
Calamia finished 2-for-4 in Game 2 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman
Kyle Ausgotharp tallied two hits after coming on as a pinch hitter.
Sophomore
Bryce Amos pitched a career high five innings as SU's Game 2 starter. He also finished with a season-high four strikeouts.

Jacob Dennis allowed just one run in two innings out of the SU 'pen.
