A dominant javelin throw by
Jackson Hersh set the tone for the weekend on Friday as the Shippensburg University men's outdoor track & field team competed at Dr. Jack M. Toms Invitational hosted by the University of Lynchburg.
Hersh unleashed a victorious throw of 212 feet, 3 inches (64.71 meters) – an impressive NCAA provisional qualifier in just his second collegiate meet. It puts him just outside of SU's illustrious all-time Top 10 for the javelin, a list that begins at 213 feet.
The throw puts Hersh into the Top 10 of the national leaderboard for the javelin and will hopefully be enough to get him to the national championships in May – last year, the No. 20 performance on the Division II performance list was 208 feet, 8 inches (63.61 meters).
Mason Petropapa,
Aiden Zimmerman and
Austin Long finished 4-5-6 in the javelin. Pretopapa improved to 184 feet, 10 inches (56.34 meters), while Zimmerman threw 174 feet, 7 inches (53.23 meters). Long upped his season best to 161 feet.
Chase Hensinger and
Ramon Urena picked up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifiers in the 1,500 meters. Hensinger ran 3:55.29, while Urena crossed the finish line in 3:59.41.
Field action resumes at 9 a.m. tomorrow and track action picks back up at 11 a.m.
