RECAP: Men’s Indoor Track & Field wins 3-of-5 events to get started at 2025 PSAC Championships

Quinan wins 5K; Kearney wins long jump, Raiders win DMR to set the tone at league meet

3/2/2025 2:58:00 AM

The Shippensburg University men's indoor track & field team won three of the five contested finals on Saturday as it put forth a solid start to the 2025 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships held at Lehigh University's at Rauch Fieldhouse.

Garrett Quinan successfully defended his conference title in the 5K; Jak Kearney landed a huge PR in the long jump to earn a gold medal, and the distance medley relay of Tommy Crum Jr., Logan Rodkey, Chase Hensinger and Ian Sherlock made it three wins in the last four years.

SU's DMR victory is its 11th in the 23-year history of the PSAC Indoor Championships. Crum's 3:08.34 open on the 1,200-meter leg gave the Raiders a two-second lead over Kutztown. Hensinger received the baton for the 800-meter leg in third place but dropped a 1:55.84 split to segue Sherlock's 1,600-meter anchor. Sherlock had to navigate Kutztown's Adam Brocato, who was a second behind him, plus IUP's Mike Formica – who split a 4:10.93 final leg that moved the Crimson Hawks from sixth to third.

The evening's penultimate event was the 5K, which net the Raiders 21 points. Quinan began his kick with 1,500 meters remaining to join a three-way lead pack with Wolfe and Cal's Jon Thrush. With 400 meters to go, the three runners were within five-tenths of a second. Quinan and Thrush were 1-2 entering the bell lap, on which Quinan split 31.4 seconds for the win and Wolfe split 31.28 seconds to beat Thrush by the narrowest of margins - .01 seconds – for a two-point boost.

Quinan became a three-time All-PSAC performer; he was also the 2023 runner-up. It was Wolfe's PSAC debut. Aiden Gonder made it bookend scoring efforts in the 5K, accompanying a second-place finish in 2022 with a sixth-place finish Saturday in 15:35.95.

Kearney, SU's only entry in the long jump, placed eighth last season at his debut conference meet. He began Saturday as the No. 7 seed with a season best of 22 feet, 7 inches (6.88 meters) and a PR of 23 feet, 4 ½ inches (7.12 meters; set at Lehigh in December 2023). On his fifth attempt, Kearney landed a breakthrough jump of 23 feet, 11 ½ inches (7.30 meters) that moved him from fifth place in the standings to first and held up for the league title.

He become the seventh Raider in history to win a PSAC long jump title, joining Mo Whittle (2022), Shamar Jenkins (2019), LeQuan Chapman (2015-16), Herman Kirkland (2011, 2013), Elijah Trusty (2012) and Jamal James (2008). Kearney's PR ranks him fifth all-time in school history for the event.

Among other field action included three additional Raider placewinners. In the weight throw, Gian Greggo placed sixth on a top mark of 54 feet, 0 ½ inches (16.47 meters) and Ridge Crispino was seventh on a top mark of 53 feet, 5 ½ inches (16.29 meters). It's the second straight placewinning performance for Greggo, who was eighth last season, and the first for Crispino.

Meanwhile, Joe Ryan culminated an inspirational 17-month journey Saturday with a tie for sixth place in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 14 feet, 3 ¼ inches (4.35 meters).

Ryan, who suffered a major injury as a freshman in 2023, achieved his automatic conference qualifier just eight days ago at the Bucknell Tune-Up by clearing a personal-best height of 14 feet, 7 ¼ inches (4.45 meters). His successful clearances Saturday made him SU's first non-multi vaulter to score at the conference meet since 2017.

SU advanced five runners (six total qualifications) to finals from Saturday's four events that conducted prelims. Quinton Townsend, who missed last season due to injury, qualified for the finals of both the 200 (fourth seed, 22.17 seconds) and the 400 (sixth seed, 49.99 seconds).

Townsend was one of three Raiders to reach the 400-meter finals – all of whom ran in the same heat. Robbie Hrabosky II earned the fifth seed by running 49.97 seconds and Kearney took the seventh seed by crossing the finish line in 50.16 seconds.

Jeovaughni Daniel and Bernard Bell III delivered strong preliminary efforts in the 60-meter hurdles to qualify as the No. 2 and No. 4 seeds respectively. Daniel ran 8.20 seconds, while Bell III ran 8.31 seconds.

Mason Boyd will be in a tight battle with Lock Haven's Matt Muthler and Slippery Rock's Zack Duda and Logan Anderson for the heptathlon title on Sunday. Boyd holds a 10-point lead over Muthler and a 15-point lead over Duda. Noah Bankert currently sits 10th while Terrence Steele is in 12th place.

Shippensburg leads with 48 points through the first five completed events. SU will have to make every point count, as Slippery Rock (40 points), Kutztown (35 points) and East Stroudsburg (33 points) are in position to potentially dethrone the Raiders from atop the conference.

Action resumes at 11:30 a.m. Sunday with the resumption of the heptathlon.
