SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team completed its weekend series with Staten Island on Saturday with a sweep of the Dolphins, posting a comfortable 10-1 victory in Game 1 before grinding out a 2-0 victory in Game 2 on a cloudy and chilly afternoon at Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (13-5) totaled 20 hits on the day while its pitchers put up zeroes in every inning other than the top of the first in Game 1. Overall in four games on the weekend, Raider pitching did not allow an extra-base hit in 28 innings – scattering 18 singles and six walks while striking out 27 batters.
Freshmen
Evan Shoffler and
Will Oates were the lineup bookends Saturday – Shoffler in the No. 9 spot and Oates batting leadoff – and served as offensive catalysts. Shoffler was 4-for-6 with two extra-base hits and three RBIs, while Oates had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs.
Senior
Gio Calamia had three hits, including an RBI-single, while senior
Carter Hinds reached base three times (two hits, including an RBI-double, and a walk) and was perfect on 10 defensive chances at shortstop.
Junior
J.T. Weaver improved to 4-0 with five strong innings in the opener. Weaver struck out four and retired the side in order in the third and fourth inning. Graduate
Eric Bohenek pitched a scoreless sixth and freshman
Cole Snyder finished the opener with a scoreless seventh.
The Raiders scored in each of their first four at-bats in Game 1, including multiple runs in each of the first three innings. The leadoff batter reached in all four of those innings – with Oates smacking the first pitch of the bottom of the first for a double to get things started.
Staten Island (4-16) received a strong Game 2 start from Alex Martinez, who threw all six innings and needed just 75 pitches to do so. In the bottom of the fourth inning, SU manufactured the game's first run after a one-out walk by junior
AJ Wenrich.
With sophomore
Ty Sherman at bat, Wenrich stole second on a swing and a miss on a hit-and-run play and then took third after the catcher's throw sailed into center field. Sherman smacked the next pitch into center field to plate Wenrich.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Shoffler tripled into the right-center field gap and Oates followed three pitches later with a double to nearly the same spot – enhancing the Raider lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Bryce Amos made his first start for the Raiders and worked an efficient four shutout innings. Amos needed only 11 pitches to get the first six outs and just 53 pitches to record 12 outs; he struck out three and allowed only two baserunners.
Sophomore
Conner Barto served as the bridge, working 1.1 shutout innings of relief, while junior
Jack Robinson got the final five outs to record his third save of the season. Robinson snagged a hot-shot comebacker against the first batter he faced in the sixth and turned a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.
In the seventh, after a strikeout and a 12-pitch walk, Robinson induced back-to-back foul outs to end it – the final being caught by freshman
Drew Brown just in front of the netting behind home plate.
Shippensburg hosts Seton Hill at 3 p.m. Tuesday for a non-conference, nine-inning game at Fairchild Field.
