SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team used a 17-0 late second half run to surge past Mansfield in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division regular season finale Saturday at Heiges Field House, 75-59.
Shippensburg (10-18, 7-14 PSAC East) team shot 66.7 percent from the field in the second half and junior
Timmy Conner scored 22 of his career-high 24 points after halftime to turn a seven-point halftime deficit into a runaway Raider victory.
Mansfield (8-20, 5-16) led by as many as nine points following an 8-0 run with 3:19 remaining in the opening half and took a 31-24 advantage into the locker room.
SU shot 10-for-14 from three-point range (71.4 percent) in the second 20 minutes and outscored Mansfield 51-to-28 during that stretch. Conner sunk six second half treys, including back-to-back three-pointers to quickly turn a 51-47 Mansfield lead into a 53-51 SU advantage with 8:45 remaining.
After Mansfield tied the score, junior
Jalen Bowie converted a layup that gave SU the lead for good.
Conner later drained back-to-back threes a second time to give SU its largest lead, 75-56, with 1:18 left.
Redshirt-sophomore
Markus Frank recorded his second straight double-double (third of the season), tying Conner with a game-high 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Frank converted 3-of-5 from three-point range and handed out four assists.
Junior
Denzel Figueroa, the reigning PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week, had another great outing on the defensive end, posting six points, six rebounds, four blocks and two steals.
Bowie contributed eight points, five assists and four rebounds off the Raider bench. He matched a season-high two made threes.
Mansfield maintained a 34-8 advantage in bench points. Guard Nasir Brown led three Mounties in double figures with 16 points off the bench. Owen Chambers finished with 12 and Lleyton Fried added 10.
Up next, Shippensburg will travel to Shepherd Monday to take on the Rams in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament. Tipoff from the Butcher Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m.
