SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team could not overcome a slow start Saturday afternoon as it dropped an 83-75 decision to Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (7-16, 4-12 PSAC) fell behind 15-4 after the first five minutes of play after Lock Haven (11-11, 9-7) unleashed a 12-0 run in a 2:53 span. The Raiders were never able to equal the score despite getting within two points (20-18) at the 8:16 mark of the first half and four points (32-28) with 1:56 left before halftime.
The Bald Eagles closed the first half on an 8-0 run to lead by 12 at the break after Bryson Scott beat the buzzer with a three-pointer.
SU trailed by 14 with 9:59 left but trimmed its deficit to five points after a 14-5 run. Lock Haven countered with 10 straight points to grab a 15-point lead, its largest advantage of the game, with 3:33 to go. The Raiders then reeled off nine straight points of their own, trailing 77-71 with 1:56 left, but could not get any closer.
Junior
Donovan Hill posted his third straight double-double and his ninth of the season with 17 points (6-of-13 shooting) and 14 rebounds. Hill also handed out a career-high six assists. He was 3-of-8 from three-point range and played all 40 minutes Saturday.
Freshman
Jaydon Smith led the Raiders in scoring with 20 points, shooting 9-of-13 from the field, while recording three rebounds and two assists. Smith matched his career high that was set a month ago against Bloomsburg and scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half.
Junior
Timmy Conner reached double figures for the 10th time this season, finishing with 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Redshirt-sophomore
Markus Frank was held to 10 points but grabbed eight rebounds and had two steals.
Junior
Jalen Bowie had seven points, two assists and two steals, while classmate
Denzel Figueroa contributed five points, six rebounds, two assists and a career-high five blocks.
Figueroa's five blocks are the most in a game by a Raider since Luke Nedrow had five against Virginia Union on Nov. 12, 2021.
Both teams made 29 field goals overall and attempted an identical number of three-pointers (24). SU made nine three-pointers to Lock Haven's eight, but the visitors made 17-of-21 (81 percent) from the free-throw line – including 6-of-6 in the final 35 seconds – while the Raiders were just 8-of-15 (53 percent).
Isaiah Stewart led all scorers with 23 points; he was 3-of-4 from three-point range and 10-of-10 at the free-throw line. Kevin Coleman had 19 points and seven rebounds; point guard Eli Washington had 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Shippensburg concludes a three-game homestand at 8 p.m. Wednesday versus West Chester at Heiges Field House.
