SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University wrestling team scored its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) dual meet victory of the season with a thrilling 26-16 triumph over East Stroudsburg Thursday at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (6-9, 1-4) won a total of six matches against East Stroudsburg (6-4, 0-4) in what was a close, hot-contested dual.
The Raiders got a major boost from their lower weights, getting tone-setting wins from sophomore
AJ Stayton at 133 pounds and sophomore
Eli Bounds at 141.
Stayton registered an exciting come-from-behind victory over ESU's Evan Thompson. The SU grappler was down on points and had to fight his way off his back moments before he reversed his opponent and scored a pin.
A seven-point second period (a takedown and four back points) was the difference in
Eli Bounds' workmanlike 11-6 decision over Ben Makaritis at 141.
Freshman
Anthony DeAngelo won a tough battle of former District 3 freshman standouts at 157 pounds. With the score knotted at two late in the third, the Trinity grad won a scramble and earned the decisive takedown against former Central Dauphin wrestler Gavin Reynolds to earn a 5-2 decision.
Junior
Trey Shoemaker and junior
Owen Koch recorded back-to-back tech falls at 174 and 184. The buzzer denied Shoemaker a second-period pin as he instead posted a dominant 16-0 win over ESU's Robert Burke, while Koch picked up a 19-4 win over Max Winkler.
Sophomore
Diesel Koser followed with a dual meet-clinching 11-0 major decision at 197.
Next up, Shippensburg wraps up its home schedule with a Senior Night dual against Fairmont State Monday at 7 p.m. The Raiders will honor senior
Connor Livingston prior to the start of the meet.
