The Shippensburg University men's indoor track & field team had a sensational opening to the 2025-26 season Saturday with new school records by
Gian Greggo and
Gabriel Lewis, eight performances that rank among the Top 10 in school history, and 20 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships qualifiers in competition at Bucknell's Bison Opener.
Lewis broke the school record in the 60 meters twice – first in the prelims by running 6.74 seconds. He came back about an hour later and delivered a blazing time of 6.67 seconds – just .02 seconds off the PSAC record shared by Slippery Rock's Brad Mueller and Kutztown's Michael Fellin – to establish the top spot in Shippensburg University history. His performance supplants Stephon Brown's record (6.75 seconds) from 2021.
For a comparison on the national level – 6.67 seconds tied for eighth on the NCAA Division II performance list last season and was enough to make it to the national championships. However, there is scant margin in the 60-meter dash on the national level as 6.70 seconds was a tie for 19th place on the performance list.
Greggo's record weight throw was a quantum leap. He entered the day with a personal best of 55 feet (16.76 meters). On his first attempt in the circle, Greggo unleashed a monster toss of 64 feet, 6 ½ inches. The 9 ½-foot PR moved him past Josh Herbster (63 feet, 8 ¼ inches (19.41 meters)) and atop Shippensburg's all-time list.
As another point of comparison, that mark would have ranked 14th on last year's NCAA Division II performance list – East Stroudsburg's Anthony Voto won the conference meet last year with a throw of 64 feet, 6 inches.
It was one of two personal bests on the day for Greggo – he improved his No. 3 all-time ranking in the shot put with a PR of 57 feet, 1 ½ inches (17.41 meters) that was also achieved on his first attempt.
The sprints were a boon for Shippensburg on Saturday. Lewis, who also recorded a PR in the 200 meters (fourth-place time of 22.22 seconds), would have cracked SU's Top 10 in that event if not for the performances of two teammates who did make the list.
Newcomers
Ke'Aune Green and
Ni'male Greenwood erupted in their Raider debuts – running 1-2 in the 200 after joining Lewis earlier in the 60-meter finals. Green, a freshman who has arrived from nearby Cumberland Valley High School, sped to a time of 21.70 seconds that ranks second in school history to teammate
Lavar Jackson. Greenwood, a junior transfer from Eastern, ran 22.04 seconds to slot ninth all-time in the SU record books.
When applying the conversions of the Gerhard Fieldhouse flat track to an NCAA-sanctioned flat or oversized track, Green's time is listed on the NCAA performance list at 21.32 seconds, while Greenwood's is 21.66 seconds. Lewis's is 21.83 seconds.
In the 60, Green finished third with a time of 6.85 seconds that ties him for ninth in school history – giving him two SU all-time Top 10s on the day. He ran 6.86 seconds in prelims. Greenwood finished seventh in the finals (7.01 seconds) after running 6.90 seconds in prelims.
Another newcomer to the sprints group, sophomore transfer
Isaiah Brightman, posted a second-place time of 8.27 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles finals that ranks him seventh in school history for the event. He was just a tenth of a second behind Penn State's Lucas Band. Brightman reached the finals by virtue of a prelim of 8.30 seconds.
Yet another happening was the completion of the heptathlon that began Friday night.
Tyler Rossi finished his first collegiate multi with a second-place score of 4,886 points (4.861 without the 1,000-meter flat track conversion), a performance that ranks fourth in school history.
Rossi was bested only by Carnegie Mellon's Luke Freimanis, the reigning NCAA Division III runner-up in the heptathlon, whose victorious score was 5,019 points. Finishing third, 34 points behind Rossi, was Lock Haven standout Nick Bellomo.
Aiding Rossi's cause was his win in the 1,000 meters, in which he crossed the finish line in 2:48.14. That time converts to 2:45.86 on an NCAA Championship-sanctioned track (banked or oversized).
Noah Bankert finished eighth with a score of 4,167 points (4,136 without the 1000-meter conversion) – a new personal-best score by 146 points. His heptathlon surpassed his previous PR set at last year's conference championships. Bankert set the tone with a PR in the 60-meter hurdles to start the day, running 9.07 seconds.
Jackson Hersh was unable to complete the heptathlon, as he did not run the 1,000 meters. Hersh did post the third-fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles bright and early in the morning, recording a solid time of 8.97 seconds. He also cleared 10 feet, 8 inches in the pole vault. His score was 3,470 points through six events.
Chase Hensinger won the 800 meters, notching a PSAC qualifier of 1:57.42. It was a satisfying return to action for Hensinger, who was sidelined at the end of the 2025 outdoor season due to illness.
Jaycen Conrad, who missed the 2025 cross country season due to injury, made his 2025-26 debut by running the 3K.
Jackson Sotosky achieved a pair of PSAC qualifiers in field events in his Raider debut – one in a vertical jump and another in a horizontal jump. Currently SU's only high jumper, Sotosky got over the bar at 6 feet, 4 ¾ inches (1.95 meters) for a fifth-place finish. Sotosky took fourth in the long jump, posting a top mark of 22 feet, 5 ¾ inches (6.85 meters).
Jak Kearney paced the Raiders in the long jump, finishing third on a PSAC qualifier of 22 feet, 8 ½ inches (6.92 meters). Kearney also scared the school record in the seldomly contested 300 meters, posting a second-place time of 34.81 seconds that is just .07 seconds behind Charles Bowman's benchmark.
Donovan Kitchen matched Greggo with PSAC qualifiers in each throwing event. Kitchen tied for seventh in the weight throw with a PR of 51 feet, 10 ½ inches (15.81 meters) while taking eighth in the shot on a top put of 52 feet, 7 ¼ inches (16.03 meters).
Colin Melhorn picked up a PSAC qualifier in the shot with a toss of 50 feet, 11 inches (15.52 meters).
In the pole vault,
Gilberto Raphael Ramos and
Joe Ryan equaled the PSAC Championships standard by clearing the bar at 14 feet, 5 ¼ inches (4.40 meters).
Ethan Conrad achieved a new PR in the 60-meter hurdles, coming within .07 seconds of the PSAC qualifying standard by running 8.72 seconds. Conrad also had a long jump of 20 feet, 7 ¾ inches (6.29 meters).
Shippensburg will take a few weeks off for final exams and the semester break before returning to competition Saturday, Jan. 17 at Alvernia.
